100 Octane

What kinds of benefits would I see running 100 octane fuel? Should I tune for it?

Ya I was wondering a similar question. Is it just fine for me to put octane booster in my ZL1? Or is there something else I need to do?

My tuner said to never use octane booster on my car. its apparently bad for the engine? I'm not a 100 on that tho.

The 100 octane will probably give couple more extra HP.

But for your ZL1 a meth kit would be a better option IMO.

if you arent tuned for 100 octane you will get no added hp. You have to have a tune, but then you have to run 100 octane all of the time. Even with a tune you might pick up maybe 10 rwhp?

You won't see much if any benefit from it unless you raise the boost or compression ratio to the point that you need it.

And octane boosters don't really do much to increase octane, either, unless you dump a whole crap load of them into every tank. A 12 oz can of something into an 18 gallon tank doesn't go very far.

You will run slower. les power. The higher the octaine, the slower and more controlled the explosion. What it does do is allow you to run a higher CR and reduce the chance of detonation allowing more timing as well to make more power with an engine built for it.

higher octane is only going to make your car run rich when not tuned for it so you lose power!

I would think that if you're running the car in harsh conditions at the track that higher octane might help keep down on KR even without a tune.

Sure a tune bumping up timing along with the 100 octane would help more, but if you're running really hot and pinging from the increase in air temp higher octane gas will help even on stock timing.

But again that's if you're running hardcore at the track on a hot day. Driving around normally I would not expect to see any KR, so 100 octane will not help.

You, my friend, are 100 % correct.

The fact of the matter is, if regular pump gas octane is allowing the car to experience KR, you're losing power with the removal of timing. This is especially true for us guys who only have ethanol spiked 91 octane at the pump and run in hot environments.....like AZ.

The use of higher octane fuel should be looked at first and foremost for horsepower preservastion. How much of an octane bump your car need's will require a bit of experimenting. Mixing pump gas with a bit of high octane race fuel, along with a data logger, will show you what ratio of mix your car likes.

I can also tell you that the chemical makeup of the race fuel you use can also have a significant impact on your car's power output. Some fuels will have slow burn rate and cost you power, while other fuels which have been oxygenated will burn just as fast as standard pump gas, while leaning out your A/F ratio in open loop operation...sometimes gaining a few ponies.

a wise man once told me "The correct octane level is the lowest octane level you can use without pre-detonation"

And he would be a very wise man, indeed.

Unfortunetly, for some of us, the best octane offered at the local pump is not sufficient to ward off detonation when in high load conditions, like drag racing.

Good contributions the last few posts. But the main cause of detonation with most of these motors running 93 is the oil ingestion that causes detonation in most any circumstance, but 100 octaine will reduce that to a minimum.

We run 14-15:1 CR in our drag motors and run 100% Methanol with all of them, but many still run 116 or so.
