I thought the LS3 is casted from aluminum. What parts are made of Iron that would be picked up by the magnets if found in the oil?

hopefully someone else with a bit more knowledge of the materials used in the engine can elaborate, but a lot of the moving parts within the engine are steel/magnetic. yes, the block is aluminum, but these arent: steel sleeves, steel cranks, rods, rings, oil pump gears, timing chains, timing chain gears, valve seats and valve train. the magnets (in theory) should pick up a lot of the debris created from the constant movement of thse parts. ill be sure to take pictures and post them up when i change the oil again at 3000 miles, so consider me the guinea pig.

I know the filter mag won't work for the V6 (oil filter located in engine compartment), but will the gold tip drain plug still work for the V6? Thanks Strobi

Sorry for the late response, but I just checked the Gold Plug site and it says that the AP-04 will fit the V6. Just to make sure there wasnt an error, I also looked up the plug for the CTS (has the same 3.2 V6) and it also called for the AP-04. If there is any problem with it fitting, I'm sure Tim will have no problem with exchanging it and helping you find the right one.

Nice writeup... all makes sense. I'll be curious to see the oil change results found. Ordered mine from a local motorcycle shop and plug from online, but probably won't get to see my results for months since oil fairly new, winter weather keeping it garaged, and major mods

Nice post, in your oil change you noted you used another quart of clean oil through to get the last of the dirty oil out. Was that just regular or synthetic oil you used? Just wondering about the cost factor. Also thanks for the links you posted ! Great job!

I would just like to make a small suggestion regarding your write-up. Please check your oil level after taking your Camaro off the ramps or jack stands holding it up and on a level surface to ensure accurate readings.

Or you can do it like it do it. Buy oil and filter at walmart. Find a mom and pop oil change shop and have them do it for like $10 bucks. It saves you time and oil spills and transfering oil. Best $10 you can spend IMO.

great safety advice with the jack stands and blocking the wheels and e-brake! but start with cracking open a beer? lol
i just want to add..... fill the filter with oil before installing, and lower vehicle before checking level and starting up
the plug works and so does filtermag, just dont cut filter with a grinder, it will give you filings that didnt come from the bearings and scare the crap out of you!!

If you arent going to crack open the filter to look at the media then no need to use a filter wrench. Punch a hole in the filter to drain the oil and then skewer the filter with same screwdriver and screw off.

Also, if you cant get off your oil filter without tools then its on too tight.

Another tip as well. Take some of your OLD oil and dip your finger in it. Run it along the rubber o-ring of the NEW oil filter and install. It will ensure that the filter comes off nice and easy next oil change.

I also wondered what you spent on your DIY oil change? I was told by the dealer the car doesn't come with synth oil, which did you use?
