I have a question about torque converters. I keep hearing that after a shift it will help put your engine in its powerband. I currently have the stock converter on my V6, it flashes to 1650 RPM's, but after each shift the TC slip is at 300-400 RPM's according to HP Tuners. I have a Circle D 5C on order, what will happen after a shift now? Will I be higher in the RPM band?

Specs:
V6 with Vortech V3 Centrifugal Supercharger (13 psi)
3.91 gears

If it's a triple you should lock it, you'll be faster especially since your boosted.

Say you install a converter that flashes to 3800. That means when you leave the line, the RPMs will hit 3800 before the car leaves. If your power band was say 5000-6500, that means you will get up and into your powerband quicker. And the looser converter also means that when the RPMs drop on the shift they won't drop as much.

When it comes to shift drop, 1500-2000 RPM drop would be kinda of alot.

1600 stall
Leaves at 1600
Takes some time to go from 1600 to 6500
Will drop to... 4000? 4500?

3800 stall
Leaves at 3800
Takes less time to get to 6500
Will drop to.... 5000-5500?

And you can lock up a triple where it makes sense. Like maybe in 3rd gear after peak torque. This you need to research and experiment with.

Thanks, it is a triple disk. I shift at 7200 and drop back down to 5000. At 5000 I'm at 5.5 psi, at 6000 I'm near 8 psi, so that should really help.

To me...

Stalling up = footbraking and bringing up the engine RPMs.

Flash to me is to wack the gas.

Flash is where the converter becomes effecient. Footbrake rpm is usually 1000rpm less or more than flash rpm.

Thanks guys. So it's probably better to flash the stall at the track? From a roll too? I would guess I couldn't lock my converter since I have a th400? I guess it's a auto/manual valve body. Thanks for the info guys

Correct, th400 is a nonlockup. As in how to race it you will have to play with it and see what it likes.

Talking TQ's

Anyone used Transmission Specialties torque convertors?
I had a TQ in my 2001 Z28 and was the best mod IMO. I really want one in my 2011 L99. I need someone in the Atlanta area to install.

Thanks.
Bill

What is TM ? My 2010 Camaro with 3200 stall feels like the brakes are applying on moderate throttle also. What is the 6 speed automatic in my car called other than A-6 ?

Can anyone explain to me why my 2010 Camaro SS L99 feels as if the brakes are being applied during the 2-3 shift under light throttle? Can this be fixed by tuning the trans.? The trans shifts great under hard acceleration. Also it has a 3200 converter, cam, AFM delete, headers, 3" exhaust w/ Borla mufflers. I'm an old school 4 speed, and carbuerator guy. Help!
