CEL - P0174 code

I've had my car tuned for about 5k miles now with no CEL. All of a sudden I got a CEL that I noticed last night. Ran by O'Reilly this afternoon and the scan tool said "P0174 - System Too Lean (bank 2)".

Now, I will also say that on Monday I had some diff bushings put in and we had to remove the exhaust to allow the diff to come down. My cat-back is tack welded so we removed it from the LTs back. In order to do that we removed the O2 sensors out of the cat and left them hanging until we were done.

I cleared the code with the scan tool and it didn't come back but I've only driven it maybe 10 miles and didn't get on it or anything.

Anyone know what that code is saying. Doesn't it have to do with the O2 sensor for the cat?

I don't have a scan tool. I just went down to O'Rielly, gave them my drivers license, took the tool out to my car and ran the scan. When I was done I gave it back less than 10 min later.

My car has been tuned for over 5,000 miles and was tuned by ADM Performance. The tune is not the issue.

I'm hoping it was a fluke thing. I'm going try to get it up on a lift this weekend and re-check the exhaust and O2 sensors to make sure they didn't come lose.

Drove about 40 or so miles tonight. Got on it hard a couple times. No CEL so far. I'm hoping the CEL I got was kind of a fluke.

I have had this code a couple of times....I've got long tubes, off road pipes, CAI, o2 bung extenders, no tune....I've just cleared the code...I figured a tune would help eliminate it?

That means that the passenger side was showing lean quite possibly from an exhaust leak, loose O2 sensor, or other problem. I would scan it to see if both banks are lean or just the one.

I would agree given the fact that this happened after the exhaust was removed. I would check for an exhaust leak around any of the non welded connection. It should be be pretty easy to spot look for black soot or carbon around those joints.

Its been my experience that those only take about 30miles to re-occur if they're gonna.
Hopefully you just got a little contamination on the end of the sensor (anti-seize) and now its burned off.
Its not uncommon for those sensors to "drop a thread" on removal and create a leak, so that might be one other thing to check if it does come back.
Good luck

Ok...so this error code has been coming back on me. It's happened twice now since I last posted this thread.

I've check my exhaust and the connnection of the sensor and it seems to be good. I have a feeling it's either a bad sensor or cat. I say that because it just randomly comes on. Prime example is that it's been off for a while and last Friday I took it out to the drag strip. After a good 4 or 5 runs I had no light. Then two days later I start it up and the light comes on again. I was initially thinking that there was some kind of exhaust leak and it wouldn't show it's ugly head until I really went WOT on a cool night or something. Well, that theory went out the door.

So...what would you do? Should I go buy another sensor (assuming I can and hopefully they aren't a ton of money) and give that a try? Then if that doesn't work look at replacing the cat....which is probably alot more expensive?

BTW: Do you think the dealer is the only place to get a sensor from?

Anyone know what the name of the rear senor is called? I went to GMPartsHouse and did a search. The only thing I could find that was close to what I thought it might be is a Oxygen Sensor. It is under the Powertrain | Electrical section, has a front and rear sensor listed, and is about $45. There is no part number listed. Do think that's the one?

YEP thats the one, if you had a tune the rears should have been turned off and you should only be running the front ones...
