I always have the cruise control ON, but this even happens when I stop to pay a toll and then accelerate back up past 70 mph with the gas pedal.
Even after 1-2 minutes the car stays in 5th gear. This is always with the trans in "D".

Mark- The first thing the dealer did was check the trans fluid level.
The Trans temperature is always cool at just under 180 degrees on the gauge when this happens.

Hmmm, ok.
And you're positive it's not actually in 6th but that the converter isn't locking?

Could be.... All I know is I must switch to "S" mode and manually upshift with the taps or the car stays at about 23-2400 RPM @ 65-70 MPH. When I uptap I can then feel the trans shift to 6th gear and the RPM's drop to about 1900 where it should be. Then I put the shifter back to "D".
Very annoying.

This could be it . Most cars the converter locks at 38- 42 mph.
If you are slowing under that it is coming out of lockup then need to re-engage at the proper speed.
Only a scantool hooked up will tell. Data logging.
They really should install one before your next trip to get to the bottom of this.
Maybe you have to "talk Turkey" with them, as they cannot duplicate the problem locally.

See the 2nd thread (L99 sticks in first) re my trans problem. Brandon has set up a second case number for me.
O'neill Chev here in Avon did hook my car up to the computer in house, but it showed no errors.
Is the above "scantool" a computer left in the car while I drive ? If so, I wonder why that has not been
offered to me as I take trips to Boston and Md. a couple times a year.

Yes it is a data logger, they offered it to me at Parsons on my frequent high idle restarts. Only mine did it when they re-started it from the time it was in the bay. They called GM who offered no solution.

It needs to be installed in your car before the trip.

Could it be they didn't offer it cause you didn't buy it there? Some dealers are funny like this.

I too have had this problem that old88 has but I have a 2012 1LT/RS. took to dealer and got same results. Can't try to duplicate where I live as I live a ways away from an interstate. It happened to mine while entering interstate from a rest stop. So I had stopped for about 5 minutes and I also had to go to sport mode and manually shift it to get to 6th gear.

Thanks again Mark. I went to O'Neill Chev last week to see about the Scantool/Data Logger
you suggested, but the service mgr was not in.
I will try to get this installed by the dealer before my next road trip but that may not be
until Spring at this point.
