Whine at idle

Just wanted to check with other owners. My LT4 makes a noticeable whine at idle when warmed up. Sounds like blower whine. I'm guessing it's normal, but none of the other Eaton blowers I've owned have had any whine at idle. So I figured I'd ask.

I dont notice any whine from mine. My car has 2200 miles on it, and about the only thing at idle, I hear are the injectors clicking slightly. Now when revved when cold...yes the supercharger whine is very noticeable.

A few times when I have remote started the car I can hear blower whine. Lower pitch to higher pitch in frequency. Sounds only seem to occur after the car had been up to temp and the outside temps are high, and the car has been parked for a bit then restarted. So maybe it has something to do with SC cooling? idk

Do not hear any blower whine at idle. Only slightly hear it on acceleration, but that's to be expected

That's not great news. It's done it since day one, so I assumed it was normal. I only have about 375 miles on the clock. Might be time to do some troubleshooting. I'm also hearing a strange harmonic on cold start when the idle is high. I'm now wondering if these two things are related.

I'll try to get a video of the whine.

Yes. Video please! If the car is completely up to temp, it's possible you're hearing the electric supercharger cooling pump, but I've never noticed a whine from mine at idle and I'm going on 4800 miles. I'll listen for it next time I get out with it and report back.

Mine whines too at startup. Did it when I first started the car at the dealership. Guy said it was blower. No CEL's. If it ends up being an issue please post ASAP.

I just went out to the garage and did a little testing. The whine really isn't noticeable until everything warms up. It also changes along with engine rpm, so it's something mechanically driven by the engine (i.e. not an electric pump). I also confirmed that it's NOT from the supercharger or it's drive system. It's still present with the blower belt removed.

I'm actually thinking it could be from the transmission, as it's an A10 car. I guess I'll have to get it up in the air and do some checking with my stethoscope. Maybe I'll even go check out another A10 at the dealer and compare. I test drove another one once, but I can't remember if that one did it or not.

Keep in mind this noise isn't all that loud. But it is audible, especially somewhere like a small garage where sound gets bounced off the walls.

I just drove mine today and listened for any noise that may sound like what you're describing and didn't hear anything. Mine is also an A10 with 4800 miles. I pulled in the garage and popped the hood before shutting it off, but didn't hear any whine at all. Just normal sounds.

so I decided to take a short trip over to the dealership where I bought my car. They had another A10 car that actually came off the same truck mine did. I took that car for a spin, and heard the same noise when I got back. So now I'm thinking its a normal characteristic of something in the powertrain.

It's strange that you don't hear anything though. It's not all that loud, but I can hear it. I think it kind of sounds cool and fits the character of the car. I'll try to post a video tomorrow anyway.

Mine is a manual.

On a side note: From inside the car does it sort of sound like a muffled vacuum cleaner (this is what mine sounds like)? Or is your whine high pitched?

I actually drove an M6 car yesterday as well, and did not hear it. I'm pretty sure it's from the transmission. I have a hard time describing the sound, so here's a video I found posted by an A10 F150 owner. Mine sounds nearly identical, though probably not as loud.

A little off track, but relevant.

I have frequency specific hearing loss, so when I describe sounds to the younger Mechs they sometimes hear something different.

It sucks getting old.
