Leaking ls3

Well its been a while since ive been on here actually basically since i bought a ss from someone on here upgrading from the v6 ive had it for a year and half and had it on the lift the other day and noticed that it appears to be the rear main seal and oil pan gasket leaking. Thought ok well i heard there was a tsb on that a while ago and it is an early 2010 build with only 12k miles on im not sure when it was bought but i looked at when it was build and it was in july of 09 so i guess im basically screwed on the idea of just making the 5 year warrenty on it? any idea what the cost would be to fix it. Thanks

Are you sure its the rear main seal? I have a oil pan leak just in from of oil filter which is being taken care of but first find out by cleaning it up good and drive a short while and recheck. Pan is much easier than a rear main seal. I also have a early build in 09.

x3 oil pan gasket. Check with your dealer. Mine wasn't sold until several months AFTER the build date. Technically I have powertrain warranty until 1/14/2015, 100,254 miles.

I will do that thanks for the info it appears to be the rear main seal with how the oil appeared to have some leakage near the transmission. but also right at the oil pan

The warranty starts on the date of sale, any dealer can run your vin and let you know if you have any powertrain warranty left.
Mine was built in 5/09 and I had the oil pan done first and then they had to do the rear engine cover, it was porous, there is a bulletin on that as well.

In order to get to the oil pan, the front cradle has to be dropped. The dealer will charge you an arm and a leg to do this.

If I was in your position, I would put in a Melling oil pump while the pan is dropped for this repair.

I just had my oil pan gasket replaced. I'll tell you something the guy at the shop told me to help you diagnose if it's your rear main also, or just your pan (I'd bet just pan)

At the rear of the pan, where it looks like the block mates to the tranny, look DIRECTLY up from the ground. You'll see a little slot that is about 3"wide (left-right) and looks up towards where tranny mounts to motor (or something like that..) If you see oil up in this little slot, you've got rear main. If not, it's just oil pan.

As far as cost, I had mine replaced at a shop local to me that I knew wasn't going to bend me over. The total cost was right around 1k (I believe 976.xx?) For that price, they replaced the oil pan gasket, and also fixed a broken motor mount that I had. I believe without the motor mount the cost would've been in the 850 range (figure ~100 for the mount, and factor in tax...)
