ZR1 Clutch at the Track

Yesterday I went to a local track and Did a 2nd Gear burnout (I always do it in 1st). As soon as I launch the revs keep climbing in a crazy way, I tought that the tires were spinning. Half the track I let go because something was wrong.

At the end a lot of smoke was inside the car (Clutch)

I let the car rest, and make a 2nd run and got my best time 11.87

Do you think I broke the clutch?

What is the proper way to heat the tires, Im using NT05R with stock wheels..

JM

I always do a burnout in 2 gear... however seems you may have heated the clutch up way too much on the launch

I guess...the launch was at almost 4K...

Did I shorten the life of the clutch?

Is there any benefit to doing it in 2nd or is that only for supercharged cars?

you should always do your burnout in 2nd gear... no matter what your setup is

Sometimes you ask questions knowing the answer....:(

So what was the problem? the long burnout in 2nd gear (John Force style) or the launch at 4K?

More than likely the 4k launch SLIPPING the clutch too much, and it over heated. Try and get out of the clutch sooner. Good thing is that the LS9 clutch is pretty resilient.

Now that you mention "slipping the clutch" I had a hard time turning the second set of lights...So I was at 4K slipping the clutch to move the car a little forward.

I was facing a turbo diesel truck with a Pro Stock style lights, thats why I wanted to keep the revs up....my bad...

NOW I KNOW that the problem wasnt the burnout or the launch... it was the time I spent trying to turn on the second set of lights at 4K

Thanks for your input.

If your sitting and holding the car at 4k and bump it up to get the light on... I dont think thats the problem because the clutch is not grabbing yet, once you take off and ride the clutch out that is causing all the heat. I think you must of been ridding the clutch to long out of the hole. Your clutch is going to be ok, just dont make a habbit out of it!

The tires probably never spun in the burnout, it was probably the clutch.

Don't slip the clutch for a burn out. Always pop the clutch in second on the wet concrete. (this is the only time you actually pop the clutch - slip it to launch) If you smell it you slipped it too much. Be careful to fully release the clutch. Take your foot all the way off if you think it is slipping. I found my self applying a small amount of pressure getting ready to shift causing it to slip.

If you smell it let it cool down 30 minutes to an hour. Probably did not hurt in unless slipping through a couple of gears.

Your clutch will most likely be fine. Remember, the higher you rev the engine before you pop the clutch to do a burnout the smaller chance you have of slipping the clutch.
