PQ, I listened to your valve train vid. I assume the noise level is louder than you remember from before. FWIIW my dual spring valve train has always sounded just about like your's in the vid since installed 10K miles ago.

I have the hi-vol Melling and my OP cold is over 60 psi and never below 35-40 no matter how hot the oil so I really sympathize for your situation. I'd be very worried and frustrated as I bet you are.

Good luck with checking the oil pump. Remember patience is a virtue and I wish you the patience to go slow and methodical as you tear the front of the motor off. Would hate to here that you slung another two quarts of oil around on our public highways!

You can also take the pump cover off and remove the guts. It's very simple inside, and will give you much greater wiggle room to get the pump on. A ratchet wrench will be a godsend for getting the pickup tube bolt back into place. I also stuffed a rag in the oil pan to prevent having to fish around in there when you drop that bolt the first 5 times you try to get it started.

Good stuff guys. Thanks a ton.

I'm cutting the filter open right now to see if there is anything in it that should not be.

Oh, I almost forgot. The back two bolts in the oil pan are about 8" long. Those two get torqued to 9 ft lbs. I say again 9 ft lbs. They will snap off if you try to torque them to 18 like all the others. I heard of a guy that did this. Lol

Ok, so here's my thinking. Makes perfect sense right?

Drained the oil and got ZERO shavings. But found this in the filter. So these shavings in the filter are from the pump?????????????????????

from somewhere in your motor, could be pump or could be something else, I cant tell if that could be bearing material. im sure your pick up tube screen could be clogged and all of that metal shavings going thru your pump in definately not good either. Take that to get analyzed by a machine shop in your area.

Yep, you need to find out what that metal is before any assumptions can be made.

That sucks PQ. You're gonna have to tear that motor down. Not only to figure out what is shedding metal, but to make sure you got all the metal out. Utter suckage...

I'm going to proceed as if it's the pump. I'll take the pump apart and look. If the pump is ground up then I'll be thankful for oil filters and just change the pump.

Will I be able to see the pickup tube screen without dropping the pan completely?

If you leave metal in the motor, get ready for a stuck relief valve in the pump. Gouges in your cam, failed lifters, etc... It'll be a crap shoot.
