here is the true fact about 1st gear starts

you start the car and put the shifter in D, the car will start in 1st gear ONLY FOR THE FIRST SHIFT SEQUENCE, the next time you come to a stop sign the car will start in 2nd gear until you shut the car off and re-start the engine

OR

you start the car and drive away in D range, then put the shifter in M while you are moving, or pull the shifter all the way to M but dont touch the manual shift buttons on the steering wheel, the cluster will display S, for sport mode, now the trans will start in 1st gear every time you come to a stop

Good Question... I will have to try it as I've never right clicked at stop before.

I sure hope you are right on this one as my test didn't result in this. I'll try again this evening...

Thanks

are you monitoring the shifts with a scan tool or just going off of shift feel,, the way i posted is what my trans does, and i have monitored it with gm and aftermarket scan tools

I can drive around for 45 minutes and everytime I come to a complete stop it starts me out in 1st gear (using D mode and M mode).
How do I know this? Because it shifts when it hits redline going 37mph. If it was in 2nd gear it wouldn't shift at 37mph under full acceleration.

The 2-3 gear shift would be until 65 mph or so. So its not in 2nd gear.

Maybe the programming is different on my car? All I know is my car drops to
1st gear everytime (time after time) when I come to complete stop (in Drive mode).

Guys that have L99 A6's please go out and experiment with your car and report back.

Drive around in D mode. Come to a complete stop. Then mash the gas and see when your car makes its first shift (35-37mph?). Then come to a complete stop. Mash the gas and see when your car makes its first shift
(35-37mph?).
That's what my car does. So its definately in 1st gear.

Then do the same experiment with M mode (without touching paddle shifters).

If your car is programmed the same as mine. It will make the 1-2 gear shift at
35-37mph after ever stop.

Result... RPMs shot up due to downshifting from 2nd to 1st.

Hopefully I can be proven wrong on this one....

If you are using Tap Shift it's going to start in whatever gear you left it in.

I think because you started out slowly you weren't in 1st gear? Not sure?

Try this for me and report back.
Just drive around in D mode or M mode (don't touch paddle shifters). Come to a complete stop. Then mash the gas to the floor. See at what mph your car shifts. Then again, come to a complete stop. Again mash the gas to the floor and see what mph it shifts. If your car is shifting at 37mph under full acceleration off the line, it has to be starting out in 1st gear.

I'm trying to figure out if there's something different in my car's programming, or everyone elses car does this.

I am starting off slow watching the Tach... No shifting has happened and at about 1500 I hit the left TS and the RPMs jump way up indicating I started out in 2nd and have now downshifted to 1st. Not really rocket science, but I need to verify one more time this evening.

That doesn't make sense to me... Your saying if I take off show it's in second and if I floor it it will be in 1st??? That a fast downshift...

1st gear is a VERY low gear. 37 mph is too fast for 1st. I pretty much guarantee you are starting in 2nd. Tap that baby down and watch it rev up quick.

I understand what your saying. I've also been confused.

But the 1-2 gear shift is 37mph. The 2-3 shift is at 65mph. (Find a stats for the A6).

So I don't know if there's a "special low 1st gear"for the tap shift? Sounds unlikely but I can't figure it out.

Here's a new test for you.
Put your car in 2nd gear (using tapshifts). You can run all the way to 65mph before you have to shift to 3rd gear.

But with the car in D or M mode (without touching tap shift) your car will hit red line at 37mph (so what gear would it have to be in?)

Interesting?
2nd gear redline (using tap shift) isn't until 65mph.

I just found the shift speeds for the LS3 and L99 A6.

As you can see the 1st gear hits redline at 37mph. So it has to be in 1st gear.

Maximum speeds in the auto(manual) LS/LT
1- 43(39)
2- 75(69)
3- 115(109)
4- 153(149)
5- 210(178)
6- 265(237)

Maximum speeds the auto (manual) SS
1- 37(52)
2- 64(81)
3- 99(111)
4- 132(159)
5- 180(189)
6- 227(280)

Yeah, I've been back and forth (confused) with this for days. It's been raining in my area everyday and its hard to go out and test my car.

All I've figure out is that 1st gear hits redline at 37mph. So it has to be in 1st gear?

But there are still guys saying the A6 doesn't start out in 1st gear using D or M mode. But in my car it definately does. And it does it everytime you come to a complete stop.

OK... here's the real deal. I'm sure most already knew this but a couple of us got confused and needed to make sure...

In M (sport mode) it starts out in 1st every time... whether you have been driving around in M or just pulled it back to M.

- If you are sitting Stopped. Shift to D then back to M.
- Then tap the left shift and DIC will show M1 because it had no room to downshift.

- Shift back to D then back to M again (reset)
- Then tap the right button DIC shows M2 because it DID initiate a shift from 1st to 2nd

Drive around in M and come to a stop. Take off and count the shifts 1, 2, 3 then hit the right tap and it will go to M4.

Bottom line is any way you try it M (sport mode) always takes off in 1st (as it should be)

D will always take off in 2nd.

End of thread... go forth and be happy...
