? WELD 17"*5" Front - Looking for 28" General Purpose Tire vs Skinny for Rim

Guys -

Ok - I figured I would toss this out to the brain trust here...... I have been thru wheels and tires like underwear ... but here is where I stand.

I have a set of 17" WELD RTS that are going to serve as my "backup set" and even my basic road work. I have some V-Series that I will likely use for track setup.

On the front - I have skinnies but would like to get a 28" Diameter "Tire" on that rim (5" wide rim) to serve for general purpose. I know there is a 26" M&H Radial (have that now) but just way too low for the car.

Has anyone ever done this with a front and would seem to me there has to be a tire (no matter what brand) that could fit on there as a decent multi-purpose radial. 28". Clearly the worse case is I get another rim set for the front and know there will be a solid tire selection.... Just want to work with it if I can.

Thanks for any help it's appreciated.

I have been down this road, and not found any "good" fitment options. There is of course the 28" M&H bias-ply that fits very perfectly on a 5" rim, but....it's a bias-ply. I have driven that exact tire on the street (with drag radials in the rear), and never had a problem. However, braking and cornering are greatly affected!!! As far as a regular street radial, the narrowest that I have found is a 215/65R17, which is 28.0" tall. There are several examples on Tirerack.com, a couple are "H" rated at 130mph. But the narrowest "recommended" wheel for that size is 6.0". Could you possibly mount that tire on a 5 inch rim? Yes, probably so, but in my opinion I would rather trust a properly fitted bias-ply than a grossly ill-fitted (squeezed-on) radial. Sorry man, until some company steps up and makes a 28" radial skinny, we are ALL out of luck!!!

That 215/65 will fit that 5" rim no problem, theres plenty of sidewall for 1" difference in the recommended rim! I had 215s street radials on my 5" rims on my olds, took off a PROPER fitting bias-plys My car felt a million times safter and drove allot better!

Hmmm, well, I suppose....if you want to go outside of the manufacturer's recommended rim width of 6-7.5 inches....well....there you have it!!! I just don't know if I could bring myself to do it. It begs the question....which is actually safer?

Good info though, thanks for chiming in Bad70Supreme!!! At least we know....it's an option now!!

Honestly, give this option serious consideration.

Instead of having a compromise setup that isn't really optimal for either the track or the street, you can optimize both activities.

An aluminum floor jack and a cordless impact tool will be your friends (but please use a torque wrench for final tightening, and if you use a breaker bar for initial lug nut loosening your impact tool battery will thank you).

I went through a very similar drill for a number of years at autocross. Having to do a little prep work like this is one way to help put your mind in "race mode".

Good luck.

Theirs a company that makes a nice 28.5" tall and 4.6" tread width radial that is available in a 17".they suggest a 4.5"-5" wide wheel.
But,i don't know if it worth $250.00 each

It says that it's a tube type,I don't recall ever running a tube in a radial tire

I had also found that Bridgestone makes a 185/70/17.
But when I checked the specs, the speed rating was only 80mph.It's design to be used as a spare only.

Thanks Much!

Guys

You have all been awesome and people here usually are. I really appreciate the assist. Although these are going on WELD RTSs they will likely be my general purpose road wheels. I have custom WELD V Series for track so even 80mph may cover.

I'll look and if anyone else has input it really is appreciated.

Thanks Much!
