Brother in Law's Mini Cooper vs. Camaro SS on windy(ish) roads
Well over Christmas my Brother in Law came over with his new Mini Cooper...not a Mini Cooper S, no turbo..no mods just a stock Mini.
He (as I expected) started going on and on about how fast it was..how great it handles etc... He said we should race (I knew it was coming) and I couldn't help but laugh at him.. He kept it up, acknowleging (finally) that in a straight line our SS would barely win..you know 4-5 seconds in a quarter mile is "still pretty close" ... yeah like 20 cars but anyway... He said he wanted to race over HWY 17 to Santa Cruz..convinced he would win.. I'm not really about racing..but would it even be close? Top speed in a Mini is advertised like 120ish..my SS is stock, stock suspension..auto.. whatch'a think?

for those not familiar with HWY 17..it's got a few moderate curves..not many straights, goes for 20 miles or so..too much traffic to really race..I'd like to find a good wide open autocross event and invite him...

It's a tiny car, with FWD, and tiny tires. I don't understand what makes him believe he can compete against an SS in any metric what so ever.

Camaro, hell, I would be mega impressed if he came anywhere close to winning vs. a stock v6 camaro. Stock Mini Cooper is 121HP; 126 MPH top speed.

We have 2003 Mini auto - it's terribly slow (CVT trans is awful but this my wife's car) BUT I can pretty much floor it through most curves without worry. The Mini feels solid to me while the SS feels loose in the rear at the same speeds. My 12 SS will kill it coming out of the corners but I can brake much later on corner entry if I need to at all with the Mini. I think it would be very close on a tight course if the Mini was an S - not so sure about a Cooper.

the road he's talking about has turns posted at '45mph' in most places..I would guess I could take most of them at 75+ in the Camaro...I doubt his mini can even go 75 mph up the mountain..lol

I almost forgot to ask - what kind of tires does he have ? The run flats are stiffer and very predictable.

Please obey all posted speed limits for the safety of all. There is no need to even consider street racing.

That's why I said that I would like to go to an autocross event..one that I could open it up some...like not too small of a venue.

Lol. I used to drive 17 every day. That moron has no chance unless it's in autox on a very technical course.

No chance anywhere except on a go kart track.
