I guess your master, who created the ammo detailing line is also special since he reccomends that method over buying his own brand of clay lube........ you were raving about him in your other threads buddy.
Maybe you have surpassed him in detailing ability........ |

sigh, let's clear something up. Honestly "it's not the best idea" was probably the way to put it when it comes to soap and clay. The thing that I don't understand is how certain people come and ask simple detailing questions and then the next day are acting like they are better than people like Barry Theal, Kevin. Brown etc..,
Detailing is a learning process there is no one person that has all the knowledge or techniques. So let's take this thread for instance and break it down a little then through some curve balls at it. Can you use soap with clay? Yes, but read this entire post. Will soap degrade clay? Yes again continue reading. OK and we just saw a video of Larry using soapy water while he clayed. Now do we know what shampoo/soap he used? Nope So let's say for the sake of things he used dawn as we want to save money right. OK now this brings up the main question. What ratio of soap and water do we use? Why does it matter you may ask, for three very simple reasons. 1. If you have two much dawn it will degrade the clay to where it will start leaving bits of clay all over your car and quite possible just start crumbling in your hands. 2. Too much dawn will create two much lube. Why is this a problem? Too much lube makes the surface more slippery causing the the clay to be less effective because it isn't having enough bite to get the crap out. 3. Not enough dawn would be like clay baring with water? What happens here is that you do not have enough lube and the clay is picking up the contaminates but when you move the clay bar around on the paint you are scratching and creating swirls. One last issue you'll have with soapy water is after a clay you have to do a complete rinse down to get rid of the soapy residue. With detail spray it is just a wipe off. This is just some of the issues you have with claying your car with soapy water. So can you do it yes, but be sure you understand the consequences before you do it. .....and to think claying your car is one of the easiest step to detailing your car. Lastly try not to bash people who get up and learn this info by trial and error and a lot of research. There is more to it than reading a label or watching a video. Plus it isn't about a hobby detailer or a professional one. It should be the communication and the enjoyment you are having with the car, because at the end it doesn't matter if Joe blow did it in 45 minutes or the crew of minions did it in 3 days it is about being able to take a step back and not having any regrets, being happy with the outcome, and finally saying you enjoyed every minute of it. |

Agreed. I use a da nanoscrub so the clay breaking down does not affect me.
You are dead on with the amount of dawn used, I think this might be a big factor in how well it works. Great thinking. Also it seems to me most detailers wash their car after claying to get the residue off even after using qd. And you guys know more than me for sure, but the proffesional very well known detailer is easier to trust than some people on a detailing section in camaro5. Not a knock against you guys as you have helped me learn so so much. Especially camarodreams (trust him) his threads are extremely helpful, especially the product recommendation thread. I went through every product on there and ordered a few things. Last edited by chicagobulls; 06-16-2013 at 12:49 AM. |
