Heeeere kitty kitty kitty....
The neighborhood cats keep getting on my car and have now put a big nasty scratch on it! I've tried everything I can think of short of hauling them off or setting out a big saucer-full of antifreeze, but that's not me. I couldn't live with myself if I did either, so please don't suggest it. I've talked with my neighbors and they all agreed to keep their cats inside, which they do most of the time. Then either the cat(s) gets out and they can't catch it or they let it/them out at night thinking I won't know. My closest neighbor bought a motion-activated ultrasonic deterrent, but unless the cat walked RIGHT in front of it it didn't work. I've bought expensive deterrent granules and spread them all around the carport. I even put some in a piece of nylon hose and sat it on the windshield wiper but that didn't work either. Someone told me to try essence of orange, no luck. I've invested in a night vision security camera to try and figure out whose cat it is but somehow the stupid thing manages to get on the car after the tape runs out. If I can figure out whose cat it is I will talk to them once more and if that doesn't work I'll call the pound and have them set traps in hopes they'll get tired of having to pay the fees to get their cat back and keep it in. Luckily my neighbor owns a body shop and is going to buff out the scratch for free (he's really good, no worries), but how long before they do enough damage that I have to repaint my hood/replace the vinyl stripe? I'm hoping to save enough money to enclose the carport but in the meantime Anybody have any other suggestions? Sorry this is so long but I'm really frustrated!

Spread cayenne pepper around the car and put some on a paper towel or some foil where they lay down. It works. I had to do that to keep cats away from my landscaping. It gets on their pads and causes some discomfort for a while then they're fine. One sniff of that and I guarantee they will leave your car alone forever.
Just remember to put down a blanket or something so they don't scratch the hood jumping off. Don't worry, it won't cause any long term damage.

I have been thinking of getting one of those hunting/game cameras with motion detection. It works in low light and takes pics whenever something moves in front of the sensor. I had a neighborhood car sitting on my car but luckily every evening I put the car cover over it so no damage but it does get really annoying.

pour ammonia around the perimeter of the car in your car port. They won't like the smell and they will go elsewhere.

Anyway I had a cat that scratched up my 94 on the sale panel and there is something that worked. It's called a scat mat. Have you ever heard of them? Also do you have a cover for your car? That would help too not only with the cats but with elements.

Ammonia ATTRACTS cats and dogs to your car. It smells like piss to them and they will come to your car just to mark it. If you have a problem with one animal this is the worst thing you can do as you will now have a issue with dozens of animals. |

Completely understand your frustration, and it sounds like you've tried just about everything. All I can offer is cats don't like water. Is it possible to put water sprinklers like those used for the lawn around the car port? Or as ugly as it would be, maybe until you can have the car port enclosed, hang some tarps and weight down the bottom edge?

Car cover is really your only option if you don't have a garage.

I would have to continue trying to find out which cat it was and go that route. A car cover IMO would get old real quick and the first time it rained and I had to remove it would probably be the last time I used it. I know some that use them and if it works for them, great. Personally, I wouldn' want any animal on top of my car even with a cover, that's why I would try and find the culprit.
Good luck!

Maybe you could adopt...
Unless, of course, this ends up happening... Or, a worst case scenario... I would just get a car cover.
