I'm pretty sure we have a controlsystem for this over here, but I went down and checked the tires to be safe. Only little over three years old, and dad already said when we put them on this year that it's the last summer whe have them since they're a bit worn.

Shocking that this kind of stuff goes on.

wow man this stuff is gut wrenching. for the tire industry to deny that the tires are unsafe. what a bunch of low lifes. all they care about is there money. The lawyer is right that is definatly borderline criminal. Its a blatent disregard for another human beings life. Its just down right horrible.

EDIT: Just wrote a pettition to the Senate and am going to go around my city getting people to sign it, getting a regulation on old tires. I suggest you all do the same.

Funny that you found this. I just had two BF Goodrich tires (street drag radials for my Z06 Corvette) and the tread on both tires was coming off sort of like a retreaded tire might do. The dealership noticed it on a routine oil change and pointed out that the tread was coming off the tire. I sent them back to Michelin/Goodrich and they said and I quote " oh well we are not going to do anything about it" and then would not give me back the tires even.

And you cannot get the tires right now because they say they are back ordered, (specific size for Z06) makes me think they know they have an issue and are just denying it. If you have any BF Goodrich Street Drag Radials you might want to check the tread, but do not expect Goodrich or Michelin to stand behind their products if you do have an issue.

I checked the new Hankooks I bought last week and they were made in 2009.

I imagine it's like a rubber band; over time they dry out and get brittle, especially if they just sit there and aren't used. A tire that's in use will flex and keep the compound "active" so I think as long as you keep your tires at the proper pressure (check them once a month) and you got them within a couple years of manufacture and use them daily you should be fine. It's when they sit unused, not being flexed for years that I can see this as an issue.

Good info to know! I'll always check the DOT code on any new tire I buy from now on.

So...are they saying that only OLD but NEW tires over 6 years are unsafe? That's all they were really talking about. But aren't OLD, USED tires still unsafe even if they have lots of tread? My Explorer, which was my dad's, had tires with most of their tread, but I'm pretty sure they've been on the truck for at least 5 or 6 years and it is only driven a couple thou miles per year.
