PDIM Intermittently Fails to Recognize iPod or Zune in USB

I am having the problem where a Zune or iPod is recognized sometimes and other times it is not recognized. The head unit cycles between “No CD Inserted” and “AUX OUT”. Once it is in this state, it is difficult to reset, sometimes unplugging and powering down or resetting works, sometimes it doesn't.

I went to the dealer and had the PDIM updated to CE using part #20893390. After the update I confirmed the head unit displayed SW ID: CE while using the Zune and holding the menu button on the head unit. But, the problem is not resolved. I am using a 2nd gen Zune and a 4th gen iPod, which are both on the list of supported devices. Other forum members have reported this same issue with other devices.

I know there are existing threads about this issue and I have read them all (i think), but there is one thing that remains unclear: Has anyone resolved this issue and gone a week or two without recurrence?

I am not referring to any of the reported indexing issues or the use of flash drives and would prefer those not be discussed in this thread to maintain clarity of discussion on this single issue. (Please/Thank you)

I have read a few posts indicating members have successfully received the update, but I get the sense that many of those members were taking this step proactively in case they get an iPod or Zune.

I really would like to hear from others who are having (or had) this same problem with a Zune or iPod.
1) Which device are you using?
2) Was the problem frequent before the update?
3) Did you get the CE update and confirm it on the radio display?
4) Did it resolve the issue or not?
5) If it seemed to resolve the issue, how long have you gone without recurrence?

Thanks!

My 5th gen ipod was not recognized 1 or 2 times within a month or so. I just got pdim software updated friday to CE, so probably not long enough to tell if it is solved. CE is supposed to fix this issue, but I don't know if it does for all of the supported ipods or not. Some gens/models have their own issues so I don't know if this fix would apply to all 4th gens or not.

I have a 5th gen 80GB classic.

Try sending codeman a pm. He worked on the interace design.

Mine will be playing and then suddenly it will say no supported device detected and I will have to unplug the phone then plug it back in. New iPhone is what I am using and I don't have the update yet I need to go get it done

I am getting the aux out every once in a while as well. I just had it installed and radio updated and thrilled it is working most of the time. However about every 3 or 4 times i get in the car i will have to pull the cable out of the ipod and connect it back. That always fixes it but would rather not have to do that.

I wish they would have done a generic radio so i can swap it out with nav, its a PITA to deal with this system.

Last night was our worst problem we have had so far. It would not recognize the ipod at all. And of course it was when my son had a couple of his friends he was showig it off to. Finally after unplugging and plugging the cable back into the ipod probably 20 or more times it recognized it. Is there a better way to get it to recognize it when this happens? This is the first time it took more then 1 reconnect to fix it.

Yesterday not only would the radio not recognize the ipod, it would not even go to Aux input. usually it gives the "aux out" but this time we could not even get that. Finally after we got somewhere and stopped and had the car off for awhile it worked again when we got back in. It is getting frustrating and seems like every time it acts up it takes longer to get it going again. Anyone else having these problems? Why would it totally ignore when we select aux?

MEY,
Which version of the PDIM software do you have? You can check by holding down the menu button for a few seconds while the iPod is playing. It should indicate SW ID: CC (or CD or CE). Also, which model (generation) iPod do you have?

You have CE, which is the latest version of the software, so there is little you can do until GM comes out with a fix. I have been trying to get my dealer and GM to realize that this is still an issue (some of them think this was resolved with CE).

Forum member codeman71 has been very helpful as a link to the GM team that should be working on this. You might want to send him a PM to let him know there are more of us with this issue.

I had the same issue as the OP since I got my 2SS back in '09... never really bothered me that much until today. I took my iPod out to load some new music via iTunes, now the car won't recognize it at all. I know it's not the cord as the iPod is charging, but for some reason I can't select the iPod as an audio source.

Anyone have any suggestions??

Oh and I have a 5th gen iPod.

RandyB, I delt with this issue about a year ago....I have and use a ZUNE and ever since I had to below done, everything has worked flawlessly!!

There is a LONG STANDING TREAD that solved all my problems, in fact one of the GM CUSTOMER SERVICE reps thats here on C5 helped get this resolved.

I have a 2010 and my HW/SW version is DB/DD, which is the latest and greatest HW/SW Versions available, I found the PDIM THREAD a long time ago that addresss the problems and got the TSB and had my PDIM replaced under warranty, as is outlined in the TSB. This thread is the one that Codeman started in July of 2009 and is still going strong. For those of you that don't know.....shortly after the cars release this problem arrose for a lot of folks...there was a TSB sent out, and its been revised a few times since. the TSB number is PI0055B and the most recent software is GM P/N #22797218 which will giet you HW/SW version DB/DD...

Open adn read the TSB, if your car is still under warrantee, they will replace the PDIM under warrantee, that is what the TSB tell the dealer to do!!

The attached TSB has the latest and greatest PDIM GM p/n on the top of the TSB.

Here is the TSB if you want/need it.....the part number you need is on the top of it.

PI0055B with GM PN#.pdf

and this is what the display will show after the new PDIM
