Something (or some things?) odd about this story.

As has been suggested, make sure you know what units your torque wrench is and that your setting is correct.

But also, why are you using hardware store bolts? Are you sure you were using metric bolts? Maybe they were the wrong thread, so that's why you had a problem with stripping. Also, what material were the original bolts? Why did you need to replace them? Can you get the right bolts from GM parts supplier?

Oh I agree with that, it was just that I was changing the strut brace on a Sunday, Harbor Freight was close by and I figured for something simple like this.....

Go to a machine shop, bet they will loan you the tap. Worst case it is only 20 bucks .
