Anyway to make Onstar not choose bad routes?

My son and I are going to Santa Barbara from a starting point in Northern California late at night.

Instead of staying on 101, OnStar wants us to take highway 154.

On the map this looks shorter. But in reality it is a winding, unlit, 2-lane mountain road that takes you up the mountain to Lake Cachuma and then back down into Santa Barbara.

I would think OnStar would be smarter than this.

If I hadn't been awake, my son would have probably followed OnStar's advice and added significant time and safety issues to our journey.

Any ideas?

Maybe it knows you have a Camaro and it was trying to get you to take the fun route.

Aside from that who knows, I always use google maps on my phone.

Hey Jeff,

Try eNav

Using eNav
eNav(4) lets you plan your route ahead of time on Mapquest.com and send it to your vehicle with one click. Store up to five destinations, and retrieve them from your vehicle whenever you want and get up-to-the-minute Turn-by-Turn directions.
• Once you have reached your first destination, you can retrieve your next destination by pressing the Hands-Free Calling/Voice Command button and saying “Virtual Advisor,” then follow the prompts.
• To remove a destination downloaded to your vehicle, push your Hands-Free Calling button and say “Cancel route.
• If eNav is temporarily unavailable, push your blue button to request a route. Turn-by-Turn Navigation is included with a Directions & Connections plan subscription, and OnStar Advisors are always available for you.

GPS units send you to locations that don't exist. OnStar picks wacky routes. Other nav systems deny that actual addresses even exist.

Electronic vehicle navigation systems are great, about 80% of the time. In order to compensate for the 20% where they are completely and utterly un-great, I use an old- fashioned map (or, a few online, because even MapQuest is sometimes WAAAAAY wrong) for EVERY route. Since I am going to check a map no matter what, I've pretty much given up on electronic navigation.

(I do use a GPS for a lot of off- road/ hiking/ outdoor applications... but for any place that I need directions to drive, it's a map only for me... I hope that technology will catch up someday, and that electronic road nav will be more like 98% effective, but for now, no thanks.)

Does it use the HUD built into the car for hands free driving?

Thanks!

This sounds good for when I remember to plan ahead.

I do like just pressing the button on the mirror though.

Use Waze or other smartphone app that lets you modify the routing criteria.

Just go past the road you don't want to take, and Onstar will recalculate route.
