L99 question Sport vs Drive, what exactly is the car doing differt in S mode?

I generally drive everywhere with the transmission in S sport, it's not often I use the normal drive mode.
Obviously the car feels more peppy in S but what exactly is the car doing different mechanical or electronically in S mode?

As far as I know, D just shifts sooner and, obviously, less aggressively for MPG's and cruising. I've left it in S since new.

The characteristics that make sports mode different are that the car will hold on to the current gear longer before shifting, and when you really want to play hard and you get on it for a certain period of time, the car will 'sense' that you want to play, so it will actually keep the rpms high (say 4,000+ rpm) so that you have the best part of the power available to you instantly. After about 30 - 60 seconds or so if you aren't still getting on it, the rpms will drop back down to normal

when doing some spirited driving as well it will aggressively downshift when braking keeping those rps up in the 4000 range.

Simply put, Sport Mode changes the transmission's shift points. It holds the gears longer, thus allowing quicker and firmer acceleration. It's the only way to go! My shifter rarely sees "D".

I have measured a distinct drop in MPG in "S" as well, I average 19 to and from work in D and that dropped to 15 when I ran in "S" for 3 weeks as a test to see if there was a difference.

Same route to and from work, no changes in time, route, or my driving habits..

I prefer "D" for my commute, it gives me another ~60 miles or so on the tank which is 2.5 days commute for me.

In addition to all the other comments...

On my car, in "S", tranny takes off in 1st gear. In "D", it takes off in 2nd.

Must be some thing different on your year. Mine does not do that.

I have been enjoying using sport mode in competitive mode. With a tuned car, it's a real Hot Rod.
Oops, I said Hot Rod.

Sport mode enables P.A.S (Performance Algorithm Shifting), forcing the transmission to adapt to your current driving style.
