The side scoops on the Z06 are for the brakes and they are functional.

I appreciate the fact that the hood and front clip vents look good. But what a wasted opportunity... I understand that hood latches, windshield wipers among other things share that space. And I like the look, I just want it to work also. True RAM air or CAI from the factory...
I think DGthe3 should add "lack of functional ______ vents" to the list of complaints. Maybe there isn't enough of an outcry for it to make the list but it bugs me. I'm sure GM thought this one through and it didn't meet all the criteria to make it on the Camaro.... Still wish they worked.

If you really think about the Z06 opening, the size alone says that its not functional. I mean there is now way that little slit would allow the amount of air needed to flow for that size engine.
Look at the WRX STi Scoop, that thing is HUGE and is functional for that tiny engine. My Mustang did not come with a scoop, But I added the Roush Hood Scoop and made it a fully functional scoop. Not easy but I did it. (I will post pictures once I finish the US Patent paperwork.) As far as Cowl Hoods today, most are not functional since modern engines do not have a carb on top of the motor, the intake tube and filter box are located in the front or front corner of the engine compartment, the amount of ducting needed on a metal hood would be expensive and heavy.

I agree. But there are plenty of aftermarket companies like (edit) APM that make functional Cowl and ram air hoods with the appropriate intake ducting to make it work. Chevy can do it too.

The 4th gen Camaro had a longer hood that helped to design a front air box that allowed for it to work. the 5th gen does not have that luxury.
Ram Air Myth... Until the cfm flowing through the hood scoop is equal to or greater than the cfm that your engine is pumping, your HP increase will be exactly zero, zip, zilch. Say the vacuum pump that is your engine pulls 10,000cfm (just an example, but not an unreasonable number given the size of the engine) through the intake. You must be traveling fast enough to flow 10,000+1 cfm through the opening before you will see ANY HP increase. Now up to that point you will be increasing the volumetric effiency of the pump. The engine doesn't have to work as hard so your gas mileage and throttle response might improve, but that's it, no extra ponies because there is no extra air. You cannot defy the the laws of physics. How fast do you need to go to flow 10,000cfm through an opening area of 0.2sq.ft. (approx 6 inches in diameter)? Well at 1mph you will flow 17.6cfm, at 60mph just better than 1050cfm.....@ 568mph you will be just breaking even at 10,000cfm and then you start making real HP!!! Who needs a private jet when you have that car!!!! Keep in mind, this assumes that the intake is in an area of high pressure and will actually capture that much air. A typical hood scoop will not. It's a nice thought though. Why the Z06 and Camaro scoops will not effect aerodynamics.... Look at the Picture of the Ferrari below, notice that the smoke stream is not touching the car, this in positive pressure, now notice the very front of the car, the smoke is farther away from the car here because the leading pressure is higher here and creates a "skin" of air so to speak. this skin or bubble of positive air does not move as fast as air further from the car. for GM to put the slit up on the nose was a smart thing since it will not effect the overall dynamics. but it also makes the slit useless.

I don't think 568MPH is too fast. Thanks, Dragon, for the reply on the turn signals. Makes sense. Now I can sleep comfortably tonight. |

my 350z has 'Heat release' style hood scoops similar to the viper and it adds a little bit more downforce... yea it is noticable... and one more thing about the air intakes and CAI... i had both a pop charger (short semi ram air) and CAI's on both my 350z and brothers charger... and the Pop charger worked better on both... the CAI tubing was too narrow and long and made what seemed like a whislling sound(turbo-ish) this is because the air in the tubing is travelling extremly fast... faster air = hotter air... less hp...and it also means the engine is gasping and lugging for more as the air cant full the plenum...btw...THOSE ARE UGLY HEADLIGHTS...........

I seen a Mustang with the License plate that said 761-MPH I thought WFT... it was a Mach 1 Nice... Right, but they are Fiber Glass not metal. unless Chevy makes a fiber glass hood for the production car which I doubt, the metal one would be heavy and expensive to make.

"I seen a Mustang with the License plate that said 761-MPH
I thought WFT... it was a Mach 1 Nice..." One of my cousins had a 72 Mach 1 that he shoe-horned one of those hot rodded 427 whatever Ford motors in it. I don't know that much about old Fords, but i remember that that car could probably do 761 MPH. He wrapped it around a power pole and that pretty much ruined the whole thing. He did come out of it with only a broken left arm though. Come to thing of it that Stang had quad headlights????? |
