Shifting just gets old in a car for me. Even when doing fun stuff like twisties. Diff story on my bikes. but that is a whole different animal and process!

For the car the tapshifts were the deciding factor. I have 30+ years of manuals under my belt and am tired of them....

Once I got my car and was able to actually drive one, it was a blast. I was out on the coast (serious twisties) and the tapshifting worked like a charm. Especially on the downshifts. It revs automatically and perfectly to match engine/trans RPM. Just a hoot...YRMV the auto!!

[QUOTE=MrE;1388492]Don't worry about what others think of you. Its a stupid arguement to get into with people. The whole "oh, you got the auto, your are a Pu$$ for getting it." Thats crap. After driving sticks for over 20 years in rush hour traffic, I'm pretty much done. If people weigh their manhood on things like driving stick over an auto, then that speaks volumes about their charactor.

Well said!
I bought an automatic because I've had back and knee surgery. I plan on keeping mine for the rest of my life.

I will order an automatic because I will be in Chicago and have no experience driving manuals. A new sports car is not the ideal vehicle for learning the manual. I'd rather spend my budget on American Racing LT headers than a new clutch. From a performance perspective, the automatic will shift every time. The manual will miss a gear due to human error. You can't count on a manual to win every race, but a faster, more consistent automatic will win every time. It limits losses to truly faster cars—no shame there—and eliminates any possibility of embarrassing the driver for poor shifting.

For anyone who can drive both, there's no doubt that a manual is more fun. Rowing through the gears and feeling the torque is amazing. Plus you have the feeling of "control" over your car. Nothing like it.

I'm not a young kid anymore. Two weeks ago I was glad to have the auto because my left hip was bothering me.

One thing for sure. If the auto offered in the new Camaro was only a 4 speed and didn't have the sport/manual mode options, I would have went with the stick.

NYC Traffic and a stick is a no go for me. Also the dealer had the auto on the floor so I drove it and loved the tap shifters. I have a Vette in manual, so I really didnt want another stick.

1) Wife (paranoid/can't drive manual)

2) Location (This is my DD, I don't want my left leg to be 2x larger than my right)

3) L99 (It's a damn good engine, and it's times prove it.)

I do wonder how much more fun a manual would be, from time to time. But this A6 is everything I had hoped for... and then some !

A) No experience on a stick and I'll be damned if I'm gonna learn on a $30k car only to find out I don't like it.
B) I'm a sucker for remote start.
C) Seems like too much thinking involved with a stick, especially in city driving which is what the majority of my driving consists of.

It's not really thinking necessarily. Once you get it down, learn the car, it becomes second nature. But in stop-n-go traffic you do have more 'work' to do. And believe me there are perks that go along with having every horsepower at your fingertips (feet). I do suppose those more coordinated can take better advantage of this.

I would honestly suggest, to anyone who's never driven stick, that some time in your life you get behind a manual (preferably one with a little get up n' go). Its an experience I think everyone should undertake in their life.

If I were... younger, single, and lived in more rural areas I would be all over it!

(NOTE: The A6 is still an extremely responsive automatic, and mine is just waking up @ 1k+ miles, still completely stock. [M] Sport mode is your friend!)

Guess I'd ask it the other way, why would I choose a 6speed. To impress my friends with my shifting skills, don't think so, to irritate me in stop and go traffic, nope. For a few more bucks I get a kickass auto and if so inclined can tap shift to run higher revs...Not sure how 6speed adds to the experience...probably just me but Ive driven manuals forever and just dont care to anymore.

Because I have no ankle joint in one foot, a little tougher to shift without it. I can drive one but it wears on me after a few miles of bumper to bumper. Plus I have a bike and shift with the left foot riding so I have my fun shifting with that toy.
