If i want an STS I only needs teh hack saw and I'm in teh gamez....right?
A guy on ls2gto did a home install on the tailpipe and put down some good numbers...for about 2300 total....of course he blew up the motor mid project...I think he only spent 4 or 5 hundred more on bearings.... I just don't trust my money hanging off the back of the car like ricer bait. By the way...I don't call a 12 foot oil line to the back of the car.."simple"...just me I guess.....

but im more worried about cold wet splashing water hitting those nice warm turbos. Quote:
that too...lol if i were to run a system like that, id have a stand alone oil system just for the turbos. just me...

I think its more about packaging and price than anything else. Its a pain to to do a front mount in 4th gens because you'll either have to lose AC, move or get a new radiator, use different fans, lose access to plugs, etc. And for a quality kit be prepared to shell out at least 5 grand on the low end. STS kits are a compromise but a pretty good one, if you know how to get the most out of them. For one, no LTs! Stock manifolds or coated and wrapped shorties are the way to go along with coating and wrapping the pipe all the way back to the turbo, gotta keep that heat in. Also, you'll have to run a lower A/R that a front mount so you keep lag to a minimum. However, this may all be moot depending on how much room can be gotten out of the 5th Gen's engine compartment. Twins anyone?

Not at all. For the budget build, it's a great thing. I've seen a great STS kit and I've heard less-impressed customers as well. The point is, for the buck it's pretty nifty...and one long oil line is nothing compared to the design and $$ involved in a header-mounted turbo.
I would consider a kit if the price were right, but I'd be more likely to get in good with a metalworker and get the headers made for a front-mount kit. |

hell i make more than 400rwhp on a stock 4.0 v6 engine lol. my 4th gen put over 800 at the wheels, but that was not a stock motor (or even stock displacement) with twin front mounted turbos |

I've done a considerable amount of research into STS (haven't actually used them, but I was thinking about it and I wanted to make an informed decision) and I've found out a couple of things. First, the rear-mount turbo system is really only designed for low boost - 5 to 7 PSI or so - applications. Also, from what I can tell, the best thing to do is buy a universal kit and do all the piping yourself. It kind-of shifts the cheap/fast/reliable scale from more on the cheap end to more on the fast/reliable end. So, no, they aren't a racers turbo kit, but they are quite capable of giving you that extra oomph.

For the ease and simplicity of the kit...yes. I could have gotten more out of it. Something was up with the spring in my wastegate so even though I was suppossed to be seeing 5.5 PSI I was only seeing around 4. That extra pound and a half would have done some good. |
