Using 6th gear?

Or should I say not using 6th gear....was going down the beautiful PA turnpike at a nice rate of speed....shifted from 5th to 6th and the car somewhat bogged down at around 85mph....do u guys see yourself using 6th gear much when 5th gear seems to be the cruising overdrive gear and 4th gear the power spirited gear?

"bogged down"? I'm guessing you put it in 4th gear...

I cruise at around 75 -80mph in 6th and shift to 5th when I really feel like passing someone. It hovers around 1,800 - 2,500rpms in 6th. I have been told that this will improve gas milage.

no i put it in the next higher gear as i was up to speed and just wanted to cruise....but it seems like 6th is for something over 100mph.

I think he means the revs dropped and the car was lethargic, not that the revs increased.

When your cruising at 70 mph OF COURSE you would use 6th gear. It's a cruising gear. The engine is not going to bog in 6th at this speed unless you are trying to accelerate in it. If you are going a steady 65-70 mph then 6th is what you want. If you want to accelerate around slower traffic from 65 mph to 75 mph or so, downshift to 5th and then back to 6th once you are cruising again. You will get much better fuel economy if you use 6th the way it was intended.

I don't really live in an area where 6th is of any benefit. Unless I find myself on a highway where I can cruise 70 or so for very long time I doubt my car will see much of 6th. I could care less about gas mileage to run through all those gears for the short distances I run on interstates. 5th at the most, usually 4th because I like the response.

6th gets great gas mileage on the freeway i average around 24-25mpg using it. When i need to pass it's a real easy shift to loop from 6th to 4th, floor it there from 70mph and have fun!

2nd from 40mph and 4th from 70mph are my favs...

Or a 6 to 3 downshift is a natural...just rev-match and you're gone!

I hope I can use 6th. On my GTO I hardly ever use 6th. I hate to to say it but Dodge was smart on the Challenger, you could order it with 3.92:1 gears if you opted for the 20-in wheels, that makes 6th gear almost useful at legal speeds.

Its still usefull.... Its for saving gas
If by usefull you mean more responsive and higher RPM... then it kind of defeats its purpose
