painted zl1 on polished wheels
This may have been posted before but I was thinking about painting the ZL1 on the polished wheels. Does anyone know what kind of paint could be used to hold up and look good?

I'm definitely painting mine. Probabily Gold leaf and clear coat. I've got the center caps with the gold bow ties, all in keeping with the theme of Black, gold and orange to match my number and class letters.

Do you think it could be painted by anyone or would it need to be power coated to hold up.
If if could be painted what kind of paint do you think would hold up |

Was told that it should be sand blasted somewhat then powdercoated. And can be accomplished without removing the tires off the wheel. When mine gets done, i'll post it.

Don't you have to set the wheel in an oven to "bake" to powder coat? I don't think you can leave the tires on.

I stand to be corrected. Yes they do require about 400 degrees F of heat for about ten minutes or so. So yes the tires will have to come off. Thanks for the correction.

I've been thinking on doing this to my polished wheels. The ZL1 recess has nice sharp edges. I believe if one were to clean the recess well with a q-tip and brake cleaner (sprayed on the q-tip not the wheel). Then use automotive touch-up paint with the small brushes in your choice of colors to paint the ZL1 then wipe off the edges of each letter carefully while the paint is still wet you should get a nice sharp edge. I would put the same type of clear coat over the color coat also. Again clean the edges while the paint is wet. When I find time I think I'm going with a black ZL and a red 1. I don't think the ZL1 needs power coating.

I talked to a guy at a body shop and he said to get the model paint. Said he has used that before and it held up really good

Weather you paint or powerdercoat there will be prep to the metal. Powerdercoat is more durable than paint and they will bead blast there rims as part of the process then do color and usually some places do a clear over the powerdercoat as well different shops sometimes have a bit different recipe so to speak.
MY .02 is find soone who powdercoats wheels alot and will stand behind the work. even if it cost more. painted and powdercoated wheels look great. flaking wheels look like crap.

If you choose to go the powdercoart route and if the tires do indeed have to be removed for the baking process, then don't forget to figure in the cost of unmounting/mounting the tires.
My dealer has already told me that mounting the ZL1 tires would run around $100/wheel. Ouch. |
