Got the brakes for my C7. Here are the weights of calipers and rotors (in C7-spec; not ZL1-spec). I thought ZL1 rotors were about 26 lbs; this made me wonder if they're actually lighter; did anyone weigh them?

Just weighed one of my ZL1 rotors for giggles... 27 lbs even. Maybe my scale is pessimistic (which means I weigh less than I think too... yeah, I'm going with that ;D )

That sounds about right. I think C7 Z06 spec rotors sound about right for a 2-piece rotor of its size; it's the ZL1-spec rotor that is too heavy for its size. Is the hat not aluminum? Both rotors are 370mmx34mm.

By the way, to show how massive the brake pads are:

C7Z06/CTS-V/ZL1, ST60(StopTech), C7 rear pads

[Regarding C7 Z06 spec (incompatible) rotors vs. ZL1-spec rotors]

Issue:
Both are 370mmx34mm, and fit the same calipers, yet C7 Z06 version is 23.8 lbs as shown in the picture, and ZL1 version is a whopping 27.2 lbs per specs I found.
So do you guys think it is the hat, or the rotor that causes this weight?

Idea:
  • If the weight difference is caused by the rotor ring: Unless the hat mount design is different (and it looks identical from pics), one could swap the hats of C7 Z06 and ZL1 spec rotors. Why don't we just try that? If the weight difference is at the rotor side, then swapping hats could mean a 2-piece solution for Camaros at around 23.8 lbs! The disadvantage would be that these rotors are not directional (worse venting) :(
  • If the weight difference is caused by the hat: Well, then I suppose I could buy ZL1 rotors, swap the hats with mine, and enjoy directional rotors on my C7 :P

At least a portion of the weight loss is due to the scalloping on the rotor itself. The air vents between the inside / outside braking surfaces on your rotors are also wider, which means less metal / less weight.

The hat too is slightly different, with the the 'indent' appearing wider / shallower on the Vette rotors, but I can't imagine that this contributes significantly. Maybe it's just a photo illusion or something.

I'm pretty sure that scallop is from balancing. The groove though... that seems curious to me. The hat seems pretty similar the hardware looks identical.

I meant the scalloping on the face of the 'vette rotors (I should have said slotting).

The groove is present on the outward facing brake surface on both rotors. No idea why its there.

I agree, the hardware does seem exactly the same.

The slots are there to help wipe away dust. Slots and holes used to be used to relive the gases released under high heat from the pads. Current pads release far less gas, some almost none.

Looks the biz and I am impatiently waiting performance results especially saving 4 lbs each on rotating mass!!!!

Why couldn't somebody get a old used up set of ZL rotors an get a set of Vette rotors and try to swap out the rotor hats. The hardware looks pretty common on the front side haven't seen the backside to see what the bolt head looks like...
I'd almost garuntee the bolt pattern is the same for the hats to ring.

I proposed this idea almost a year ago. Lol. I think it would work fine as long as the balance and runout is checked.

I got you... I agree then. It's a shame that Brembo/GM don't sell replacement rings.
