Are you talking about the piece that is under the front of every vehicle?

You mean the thing that runs the length of the front fascia? It's probably an air deflector.

More properly known as an Air Dam:

Quote:
An air dam's purpose is to reduce the amount of air flowing underneath the car, which has a number of benefits. Most cars do not have smooth underbodies--exhaust, drivetrain, and suspension hang down, creating considerable additional drag. In this situation, a front air dam can improve aerodynamics even though it increases frontal area. More importantly, a front spoiler reduces air pressure underneath the car. Any air remaining under the car is turbulent, just like air behind the rear of a vehicle. That's the principle of drafting in NASCAR; guys get hauled along behind the lead car by riding inside its low-pressure wake. A front air dam creates a similar effect under the vehicle, essentially sucking the car into the ground.

Yeah, some of those 4th and 3rd gens had no grille opening at all, they depended 100% on the air dam pushing air up from underneath. It was great for reducing drag, it helped make the car very aerodynamic.

I guess a little air could leak around the fog lights, but not much.

it also tells you when you are too close to the parking block. it make a really good scrape sounds! and if a dip is too deep for your speed, you get the same warning sound! thats how my 4th gens airdam works at least. its 5.5" off the ground. the 5th gen is 5.0"

It doesn't have anything to do with cooling on the G35, but it is intended to keep air from getting under the car. If it's like my 350Z, which it probably is, there are also covers under engine to keep the air at bay. Those too should be left on. It's just one extra step in changing the oil.
