difference in gas mileage switching from Shell to Sunoco

I just drove to Pa from Va this July 4th weekend and filled up with Shell 93 as I always have. I averaged 22.8 mpg on the way up to Pa and drove appx 70mph with and without AC at times.

On the way back I filled up with Sunoco 93 and drove the same style back and averaged 25 mpg.

I have a few basic bolt on mods and a Janetty Racing tune for 93 octane. Car is a 2011 SS, 6-speed. I think I may have a new brand of gas in my future. Any thoughts?

To many variables here to make this a valid comparison.

Could be some truth to the gas but more likely the number of hills etc going in one direction vs the other, etc.

This is likely the cause. Since it's a there and back trip, all your uphills on the way there would be downhill. I know PA is quite the hilly state (it contains the highest point of highway east of the Mississippi, I think). You'd have to drive the same route, the same direction twice to get a more valid (but still flawed) comparison.

EDIT: Ethanol regulations are also different from state to state, that can definitely have an effect.

Sounds like you found a new brand of gas to me! Same roads there & back? Still, I think I'd be switching!

I recently took a trip back home to Rochester NY from Murrells Inlet SC. Took the same route up and back (837 miles each way) I normally run Shell 93, but on this trip I used Sunoco 93 and Mobil 93 also. I averaged 24.2 on the way up to Rochester NY and 24.7 on the way down to Murrells Inlet SC.

True...Speed, traffic delays, weight, temp. humidity, altitude, AC, windows or sunroof opened or closed, etc. etc. etc. My trip was pretty consistent as far as the variables go up and back.

Just to put a little light on the shell and sunoco fuel deal, down here in Florida I tried both makes of fuel and the shell burns up faster than the sunoco, and I think it is because shell uses nitrogen in the fuel to make it burn cleaner. I always used sunoco in my supercharged stang and got really good milage, so I use it in the camaro and I get between 16-19 in the cty and between 22-28 on the highway, depending on how I drive.Heavy right foot.Growling V-8,, sounds good.

I don't know about it getting better gas mileage or not, but I do like the official fuel of Nascar.
