V6 Compact Spare

Hello All,
For those of us that are in the dilemma of wanting a compact spare and only buying with the sealant/compressor, has anyone made any headway on a spare tire solution? Yesterday I measured the circumference of my 20 inch polished, went to my local dealer and measured the circumference of the compact spare finding it to be about 5 inches smaller. I have been told by the parts manager that we can not use the compact spare on the rear as it will damage the rear differential. He gave no explanation. Any input here? I do not have the limited slip differential so I believe it will not matter.

cheers,

Bill n Bev

I don't know Bill, I DID get the compact spare when I ordered my car, and I was NEVER told that I could only use it on the back, and YES, I have a 2LT and 20's. Did you look in the manual to see if it said ANYTHING about it?

If you have a V6 with auto, you do not have a limited slip diff. so no worries about using the spare. I'm glad I got a spare. I can't imagine running around without one (and no run flats).

2SS here. I was surprised to not see a spare tire when I got it. Even more surprising was the lack of jack and tire iron. That was dissapointing. Luckily my truck iron fits perfect and I use my wifes mini van scissor jack which works great as well. My solution was to buy another set of rims and tires on ebay. If I get a flat that can't be fixed with the provided compressor I call her and she runs a new tire out to me. Problem solved.

ONSTAR is OK, but who wants to wait?

Most or all "compact" spares are smaller than the normal car tires regardless of manufacturer. The only difference is they affect the "tire pressure" monitor while in use.

Always run the compact spare on the front for RWD, and on the back for FWD. 50 miles at under 50mph. Differing wheel speeds are very hard on a differential, LSD or not.

I forked over the $150 for a spare as well. I hope the jack & tire iron are included!?!?

Sooooo...if I have a flat on my car, it's got the RS package, and the flat is on the rear, I'm to pull off the flat, pull off a tire from the front and put it on the back, and them put the spare up front? That's correct, right?

Personally, if one uses the spare as it's intended, as a temporary solution, it'll work fine on the back. It's so purpose is to get you where you can get the original tire fixed or replaced.

Truthfully this was the nail in the coffin for not getting the SS for me. It was 90% "What do I need the extra hp for?" and 10% "Tire repair kits are gay". I was looking at Vettes awhile back til I found out about the run flats, even then you have what, an hour to get somewhere? Late at night, coming back from some vacation spot - no thanks. Ill take the spare.
