To break in or not to break in?
so i want to drive this thing but i personally refuse to go over 80mph in this car till atleast the first 100mi. now friend says its not necissary at all to break it in, not sure how much i trust him. so i decided to just drive around in it till i reach one hundred miles to open it up. my gf says that vw told her not to drive it long distances for a little while. im not sure what to do. how many of you would do what till you open it up? do you need to break these new engines in at all? of course i mean the camaro

First off what vehicle are you talking about in the first place. Second of all, read this website.

uhm WHAT CAR DAMNIT ....lol Make sure you read that sight though, don't beat the crap out of it, youre supposed to vary acceleration and not sustain speeds for extremely long distances.

on the camaro. what else would i do. and i figure no more than sixty for the first 20mi (10 min for me) then get the oil change and then go to vegas. then ill get another oil change in vegas and head home. ill go frm 30 to 65 then to 30. sounds good or what flaws are there

Well, I would drive it hard ( no clutch drops lol) but hard for the first 25 miles, get an oil change. Then just vary it and get through all the gears at different rpm ranges. oh and use real oil for the first 1000 miles, then switch to synthetic, another reason driving it hard (but not beating on it) helps is because it seats the piston rings.

Everyone should really just look at the sight I posted it says it all right there...babying it doesn't seat the piston rings and cause crap to happen in later engine life.

Your friend is partially right. (I didn't read that link, but rather am using infinite wisdom passed down from GMHTP magazine )
The breaking-in period isn't a huge issue as much as it was. However, it still exists (the need for a break-in). How long you take is up to you. They advise ~500 miles, I think. The reason is to seat the rings (like said above). And city driving is preferred to do that. Because a constant rpm is only going to seat the rings at that speed, not the rest (over-simplification). Opening her up once of twice isn't going to kill it. In fact, it may help out the break-in process. Also - as I think was mentioned above, get an oil change earlier than you're supposed to. Because the first round of oil is gonna get REAL crappy, real fast with all the wear on the brand new parts (mainly the rings). So: change the oil early. Don't go road racing for AT LEAST 200 miles (imho), and vary the revolutions (minimize highway driving). Hope that helped. EDIT: I just read the link posted up...and although technically it's the same thing (motors and all) I'd rather not rely on guides for BIKES (and other small vehicles like that) to break in my CAR. (call me picky ) Here's the GMHTP article I was referring to. Don't want any of you to think I'm pulling this stuff out of thin air. Quote:

Thats very sound advice Dragon!... First thing of the lot, I plan on filling up the tank... cruz around down town seattle... then down to Alki Beach... then maybe over to the ocean for a nice twisty drive... Find a nice place to stay the night, Do a photo shot by the beach at sun set...Cuz this is our (me and the maro) honey moon... ... Then the next day hop on the freeway for a nice cruz home... which has few spots I can open her up and see what shes got... That will be the best weekend if my (our) life...

As far as filling up the tank as soon as you get off the lot, you should know that a full tank of gas is always included in the price you pay for the car. Look at the window sticker. A full tank of gas is actually listed as a standard feature. So you should never drive off the lot with anything less than a full tank.
I've heard about 400ish miles, so pretty much what Dragon said. The advice I've heard said to drive like you normally would, just at 80%. So just drive your normal commute, but don't pound on the thing. It is generally not a good idea (for many reasons) to do a burnout driving it off the lot. And yes, while driving your normal routes during the break-in period, try to vary the RPM more than you normally would. And to echo Dragon, get the oil changed at the end of the break-in period, then follow the manufacturer's schedule after that (GM includes computers that tell you when to change based on driving conditions, not mileage.) |

the DIC should tell it all. yeah, my original plan was to get an oil change after 20mi and use only non synthetic oil for the first 1500mi. then frm there on race stangs, civics, tCs, and even fiestas with racing stripes
guess i hold off on the vegas trip. in the mean time i can get the windows tinted and let them dry. i always let 5 days to dry. also taking day after i get it off frm work. but i really work my own schedule, so i can cruz inbetween days

Oh great, the closest Chvey dealer is 50 miles away on the highway...guess I'll take the small roads home for a bit then.
