Another zl1 gone. At this rate the zl1 will become a rare breed. Lessons should be obligatory. Wonder how old was the driver.

All in good fun! So lets not get our panties too much in a bunch. Bash my GT500 if it makes you feel better.

We have sunk a race boat a time or two and have been able to save the motors but they had to come apart and be torn down but they don't seem run long enough to have hydrolocked. The way I understand it, the second or two it's still running it is blowing exhaust gases out and not enough water gets into the intake side because they don't run well on water. The motor will then fill up with water and if you tried to start it, it would break a piston or rod, which is why it would have to come apart. I'm no expert and could be wrong, just know what has happened to us in the past.

Makes sense. I would definitely want it torn down and gone over before I shelled out any real money for it.

So I'm wondering, if the air bags would have gone off, would it float?

The drivetrain in this car (based upon what I have seen that the media has reported) is probably fine. I know this will probably get a lot of 'spirited discussion' going, but my reasoning is this: in all photos and all news videos I have seen of this incident, the water in the pool appears pristeen, no hydrocarbon sheen on the pool water surface is visible. This would mean that all fluid systems in the car (motor oil, coolant, brakes, transmission, and differential) are sealed so well that no or very minute amounts of fluids from the car escaped into the pool, which would mean that pool water would have very little chance for ingress into those systems. Only if the engine ran while submerged would hydrolock occurr, and for that to happen, pool water would have to make it past the air cleaner, superchargers, intake, valves, and into the cylinders.

The real damage to this car (IMHO, from years of doing professional autobody repairs), aside from the mechanical/body damage done by the actual wreck and obvious clumsy recovery, is the damage done to the electrical systems and the suede interior from immersion. Salt water vs. fresh water does not matter to electrical components; unless immediate actions are taken to de-hydrate each component, they'll be ruined; anyone who has had their kids drop their smartphone in the toilet to see if it will flush down can testify to that.

It's not just Texas btw - about 7 years ago in our neighborhood that was just freshly built in the middle of nowhere, NM - we had a Mustang GT loaded with teens out on the main highway driving with the TC turned off and showboating. They lost control and went off the highway, through the subdivision outer wall, and into a neighbor's brand new pool. I believe they were unable to get out of the car after it submerged. Trying to dig up the pics, I came home right after it happened and saw the car in the pool. Was all over the local news at the time.

Apparently, the ZL1 is a terrible submarine...

Has anyone else seen this?
