LT headers with stock exhaust
Would it matter? I'm thinking about doing the long tubes first and later on getting a cat back since the thing I want most is obviously the headers. It sorta seems like I want to do everything backwards but I think what was holding me back is that I wanted them most and felt like it was the last thing I needed to put on. Is it going to sound better or worse? Is this a horrible idea? I'm still going to end up with the same setup just not in the same order...

you really should get the catbacks first...it's the same philosophy as a CAI for me...why add the ability to flow more air if the exhaust is going to restrict it anyways...it won't really hurt anything to do it in the order you want, but you want see much in the way of gains until you do the rest...I've never heard LTs with the factory exhaust though

Yeah it's got me curious... I wanna know how it sounds. But I definitely have to get rid of those giant stock mufflers soon

If I'm not mistaking the stock exhaust is a straigh through design, its not very restrictive. I've seen a few videos on youtube of Camaros with headers and Stock exhaust I thought they sounded good. I'll try and find one and shoot you the link.

The stock exhaust itself isn't very restrictive, the manifolds are. You'll still see good gains(it's a 3.6L with duals running 2.25" tubes, the stock 396 exhaust in my '68 was 2.25" and restricted that motor).

I see absolutely no issues with doing the LT headers first. You will still make great power with them installed on the stock exhaust...so don't worry about that.
I'm thinking it probably won't sound all that bad either! Do it and post up videos for all of us to hear!

Yeah, that would be no problem at all, and in fact, with long tubes, high flow cats, and an aftermarket exhaust, its a lot louder than with just a cat-back (or axle-back), possibly too loud for many people.
So doing headers and cats first, may be the best option, so you can determine if you then want to get louder or not. |

Echo all of the comments. Try it. You may have to modify the length of your stock exhaust though. LT's x HFC's = longer than factory exhaust manifolds/cats. My Stainless Works LT's/Random Tech HFC's were about 5" longer than the stock pieces they replaced.
