20 mpg on v6?

I was noticing the other day on my way to work that I was getting 20.1 mpg on the interstate doing 70 mph. This it's unusual because I normally get around 27. Later that evening my check engine light came on. With that my cat still read 400 miles per tank.
I pulled my m.a.f. sensor and cleaned it with mass air flow cleaner. After the reinsertion, my check engine light has went away. Any help would be appreciated

benjamin.i.cambell,

If you find out please send me a shout cuz since bought new my California Camaro V-6 engine hasn't impressed me much in the MPG catagory. It appears everything runs right and use mid grade gas (Chevron) and still my numbers could be better.

Is it possible the sensor calculating your MPG is off, but your car is actually getting the miles you would expect?

Run it to empty, reset your avg MPG, and set your trip odometer to 0 for one tank. See if your mileage matches your mpg.

A couple of weeks ago, I made a trip to Louisiana. I averaged 78mph. My gas mileage was 20 as well. This was over a 600 mile trip. For the return trip, I filled up with super to see if there would be any noticeable difference. There was no change in the mpg but a definite improvement in response.

I use the cheapest grade and still average 400 per tank. It still feels peppy. But last week it projected 27 on the interstate. This week it says 20-23 at 70 mph. At 80 I get 25... maybe at 90 ill get 27 again :-D

It seems to be no matter how I drive the car im getting the same estimated milage per tank. Foot through the floor or being gentle, I still average between 20-23

This is very strange. We have the same model and I have never had a problem. Done quite a few mods too. I would take it in to the dealer. This could be the first sign of a bigger problem.. I hope not.

I don't know about you guys, but driving at 70mph I almost always get 28+ Best I have seen is 32.

I use premium gas. But it sounds like something could be wrong... Especially considering how far off 20mpg is on the highway for these cars.

Maybe burn this tank off and fill up again and see if it's the same.

Check your tire pressure, also check and make sure your air filter is clean, you already cleaned your MAF sensor and if that was a little dirty I would check the filter. Also is it Auto or Man?

Tire pressure is all set to 40 (did it 2 days ago) I took off the entire intake when I did my maf sensor. Didnt need to but I did and cleaned and check it all.
But im buying a K&N intake (used but good). So ill need to get a brand new filter for that. But I just put seafoam in my tank before I just did a fill up. Projected 426 miles for this tank, and runs smoother. So, I did a number of things to it, something stuck haha

40 is kinda high isn't it? usually 35 ish for tires unless you're racing right? I could be wrong.

Back it down do 60-65 on the interstate then hole the button in to re-set mpg's.

Should do 27-30. I easily do 30-34 depending on conditions with Sunoco 87 oct.

I've set my tires at 40 PSI since I've owned it,four years now. I got 44,000 out of the original set of Pirellis. 40 PSI doesn't hurt anything, I'd rather be a little high than a little low.
