91 Octane a Must?
I was just wondering if anyone here may have felt a little penny pinched and went with anything other then 91 octane in their camaro's. Since day 1 I have only put 91 in but I cant lie, Ive reached for an occasional 87-89 but could never actually pick the pump up. I always put 91 although I'm spending like $50 every 4 or so days...lol.

it all depends on what engine you have. If you have a SS then yes, you have to use premium. If you have the LT or LS, you can use regular and you will still be fine.

Yah, I have the 2SS. Just reached 1000 miles a couple days ago I mean I dont mind shelling out the money because I knew what I was getting into before hand but it seems like my 96 Impala SS has twice the fuel life as my camaro...lol. I have a supercharged Monte Carlo SS that is great on gas so i guess I got a little spoiled..lol

i dont understand why people all ways ask if some one has a SS or lt when its in there info .... by to answer your question you get better MPG with 91... for years people have thought to put cheaper gas in there car when the car say premium only. but when you put the wrong gas in you could get worst mpg and loss a little hp and over years could cause more damage to ur car
bottom use 91 in cally you cant get 93, but i use 93 |

That's all that I use as well! I can tell the difference between the initial 87 that the dealership had in it and the 93 that i run on daily...not a noticeable driving difference between 91 and 93. The 6.2 sure does like drinking gas though, gotta love the power of the SS beast though!

I understand why you choose to put 87 considering you drive 900 mi a week, but i always use 91 in my Lexus and plan on using 91 in my camaro and I've found that cars that say to use premium gas should get premium gas.

The SS engine was designed around the higher octane fuel. The emission control computer will detect spark knock and adapt back to a lower spark table setting, producing less power than what it was designed for.
Also, in the early VINs there was a problem reported where after running 87 and then returning to 91/93 the ecm would not pick the hotter spark table back up and have to be reset either by pulling the fuses to it or the dealer reseting it with a diag computer to get it to us the hotter spark table again. There are several threads about it on the forum. search for "fuse pull" for more info. I do not know if this was corrected in late VINs. |
