Don't be afraid of using a machine on your paint. It's easy and safe, and much faster with way better results then you'll get by hand.

They most certainly can and will depending on the type of foam, what polish is used, what polisher they are coupled with, and the level of experience you have.

You can do some nasty damage with the wrong combination.

I've parked my car under an oak tree several times and it does get spots frequently. I've been using Wet Paint http://www.wetpaintglaze.com/ for several years now and it will take care of most imperfections from a black car with swirl marks to a recent IOM with love bug infestation. Learned about a guy that uses it on his beechcraft. Not cheap but did work in my case but it's not silicone based so won't affect any re-paintint

Another tip is if you plan on using a Random Orbital like the Porter Cable 7424, get a 3" backer pad and a few 3" pads too. These work great in some of the smaller hard to get areas. I use the 3" on the pillars to help stay off the glass and the convertible top on one of my cars and around some of the more intricate areas of the front bumper.

I use Meguiar's Ultimate Compound for small scratches, water spots, anything! Great product. It gave new life to my son's 2003 Jeep Wrangler and my other son's 2007 Mustang GT. I have a Camaro SS V-8, 6 on the floor and I keep her pretty with this stuff!

I use it also! Great stuff. I even use it after wet sanding and removing orange peel to bring the shine back.
