Starter woes...

My starter has been giving me slow cranking problems for a while now. sometimes I wonder if it will start if I stop.

Can anyone recommend a geared starter? I need to get one ASAP.

You might also check your battery, I know I have had a bad battery making me think that my starter going out.

Check your battery first OP. My starter cranked over "slow" until I changed my battery. Problem solved.

Also check the starter bolts. Believe it or not that's what my problem was! I thought it was my battery because the starter seemed sluggish but it ended up being loose bolts causing it to bind a bit! I think my dealership didn't tighten them when they lifted my engine to repair an oil leak!

There's no way you need a stronger than stock starter...check the battery and make sure you've got the same voltage at the starter as at the battery...the recommendation to check the bolts is good too...the starter grounds through the engine, if it's not held tightly, it'll arc and build up resistance and lose power.

The heat from the headers is causing it to crank slow when hot. Battery voltage is good. I should have mentioned it earlier.

What headers are you running? Even on the hottest days I don't have cranking issues.

It could also be in the tune...a little less timing while cranking can make all the difference in the world.

I installed the cam and everything last year, and I did degree the cam.
The headers are 1 7/8 dia stainless works. they are not coated.

i did adjust the timing a bit up to 400 rpm. it made no difference.

I guess the SW headers go a lot closer to the starter than Kooks do.

My hood is even vented.
