When you say "doesn't crank'.
Does the starter turn over and act like it has no spark, or nothing happens when you turn the key?

you gotta prove that it is missing either spark or fuel first. You ever have optispark issues in the past?

I personally would pull a spark plug wire, take a old spark plug and push it into the wire and rest that against the engine to see if you are getting a spark. That's what I had to do the 95 Bird I had.

im quite sure it's the optispark , the car has never had a new one and it has 123k miles and it's showing all the signs of needing a new one

How old are your plug cables? and are there any that might be melted thru. Such as laying on a header?

If it is the optispark you are not going to recover from it easily. 123k on a non-vented optispark is a lot. An optispark set up has a lot of parts. More than likely the cap and rotor have never been replaced. Even that requires the removal of the water pump. Good luck, its a pain in the behind.
