Gear ratios

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and pretty much a newb to cars in general and was wondering if anyone could explain gear ratios to me and what an ideal gear ratio would be. Sorry if this is a dumb question and if you respond thanks for the input.

Basically the lower the number ie 2.73 the taller the gear is. Higher number gear ie 3.73
gives you better performance off the line. It is a shorter gear. Taller gears give you better gas mileage.

I'm actually getting better MPG since my 4.10 install.

So a higher gear ratio is better for performance driving then?

Better acceleration because it'll bring your RPMs up a little. But keep in mind, traction becomes a little harder off the line, and on a stock motor you'll loose a little bit off your top speed.

For the Camaro's 4.10 for the manual and 3.73 for the auto seems to be a good fit.

I'll tell you what. We both get on the highway, stuff it into 6th gear, and see who can go the farthest on a tank of gas.

maybe true on the highway...but I do about an even split highway/around town and my mpg gained almost 1mpg. AND...I don't have to downshift out of 6th to actually pass anyone.

On the highway, I'm still at just under 2000rpms at 70...which aint bad.

Downshifting to pass is one of my favorite things to do. I want to have to do that. That is very good rpms on the highway with that gear. Nice! All kidding aside, I'm sure you are loving that gear change.
She must fly out of the hole.
