Indexing of the windows is a method, like in a mustang, or a G6 GXP for us GM folks... When you open the door the window drops just about an inch... and when you close the door the window doesnt go UP until the door is closed. Its to help keep a good seal and for air pressure.

WHen the indexing isnt working, the window just doesnt move when the door opens or closes. The windows still function normally, they just dont "index"
It is also a timing issue. You do NOT want to quickly jerk the door open. There has to be a delay built into the latch release to allow the window to drop out of the door seal before the latch releases. Try to activate the handle, slight wait, then pull open to let the system do its thing. The end result is a much quieter interior due to improved sealing against wind noise!

Yes... but it wont close. When the door is closed the window closes the rest of the way and makes a wonderful seal. When you open the door, it drops and little and makes opening and closing the door easy.

Now if it is broken and doesn't drop, the door will open, it kinda pops out of the seal but you CAN NOT close it. It would need to be put down a bit, shut the door then put up. Not possible if you are exiting the vehicle.

It is not a timing issue, it works very quickly. By the time you open the latch, the window is down enough.

That help?

For all of you planning on getting your windows tinted.
Let the tint installer know that your Camaro has indexing window.
If they do not know as the people that did my 2004 SSR the tint will end up short by the indexing height. They had to tear mine off and do them again.
They can take care of the problem by opening the door and then flipping the door latch in the door to make it think it is shut and the window will index back up.

Good advice. They got my C6 and my dad's Mustang right without telling them. Any good tint shop should notice this when they open the door the first time...

Ok, so what happens in the middle of the winter when the car is all iced up, I go to open the door and the window can't possibly go down? (for those of you who live in warm climates, on some days a car can ice up so badly that you can't even open the doors, never mind a window!)
1) Will the door still open up?
2) Will the window motor burn out trying to go down?
3) Will the door then close? (apparently not)
Why does everything have to be so complicated?
I like doors that have the entire window frame as part of the door, then you don't have this issue.

Ugh, I know about those days. Sometimes in winter I'll pull up to a drivethrough, only to realize my window's frozen shut and I have to open the whole door just to tell them my order. Yet another reason for me to keep the Grand Am and never subject the Camaro to harsh weather.

If they ever get this first issue with the window indexing fixed you can fix it later without having to go to the dealer. Its easy to reset, close both doors, Roll both windows down and hold both switches down for 10 sec. Then roll both windows up holding the switches in the up position for a few seconds. That will solve the issue in the future if your battery ever goes dead and they need to be reset.

Wow great questions... I have no idea. The C6 never gets frost bite... I know what you mean though, here in Ohio that happens frequently in the winter. My guesses:

1) Will the door still open up? - PROBABLY

2) Will the window motor burn out trying to go down? - NOT LIKELY I BET IT WOULD TRY THEN STOP RUNNING. More likely it would rip weatherstrip if its really frozen.

3) Will the door then close? (apparently not) - PROBABLY NOT

Not the case on the corvette. Doors closed, windows up, hold up 3 seconds, release, hold up 3 seconds, release... done. Not sure how the Camaro will be unless you are sure this is the way...

Well, I was sorry I brought up a subject (window indexing) that had already been talked about. BUT, I found all the information very helpful! Thanks again everyone!

Somehow, we lived without "window indexing" on cars for many decades, but now everything has it. Just one more needless gadget that causes more problems than it solves.

Wind noise can be pretty annoying in my '69 Mustang & '67 Fairlane (both real Hardtops with original roof rail weatherstripping) ... but on the 3 SN-95 Mustangs I've had without "INDEXING" ('94. '98 & '04), I've never heard ANY wind noise in 335,000 miles of driving !!

Yet, it had to designed into the 2005-up Mustang and now most new designs including the Camaro.

I suppose now there are people out there that have been brainwashed into thinking they can't buy a new car without it, so we are now stuck with one more unneccessary feature that may require servicing sooner or later. Kind of like power sliding doors & lift gates on today's minivans ... are these problematic features REALLY neccessary ??
