What is the difference????

Looking at exhausts......The one I like is the American Thunder flowmaster.....my question is.....what is the advantage to the catback exhaust vs the axelback exhaust??? I mean is replacing the factory pipes all the way back really needed? Does doing that vs just replacing the mufflers give some advantage that I am unaware of?

sometimes the piping is a little bigger than factory all the way to the rear, plus your getting ( with most systems) quality stainless all the way back. Not to mention it can be a tad lighter, and you get in x pipe in some instances.

And maybe I should add that what Im looking for is the better sound. One of the guys in my local camaro club has the AT flowmaster catback system and I love the sound it makes. Wondering if part of that is the catback pipes or if I get the same sound from the axelbacks.

They won't sound the same. The catback removes the H pipe, resonators, and mufflers, and replaces with just an X pipe and mufflers versus the axleback that only replaces the mufflers. The car that you heard, was it an auto too?

You know....I never asked him if it was an automatic or not. Why does everyone keep asking that? Is there going to be a different sound between an auto and a manual?

Yes. Hopefully someone with the auto will tell you specifically, but as I understand it, the L99 tends to drone more and the active fuel management will essentailly cut you from 8>6>4 cylinders. The sound isn't as appealing when the AFM kicks in. This is something the LS3 doesn't have. SOLO performance has added a Jpipe to their cat and axlebacks to combat this sound. www.solo-performance.com. I believe there is another company on here that uses this same technology.

We are asking because an L99 sounds like u r choking a goat when AFM kicks in. My buddy has GM Performance axle-backs on an L99 and u can really tell when cylinders kick out. I have Flowmaster AMT cat back and it sounds awesome to me. I would go with full system to get rid of resonators and have AFM tuned out. U will like it more that way.
