what is the purpose for window indexing?

What is the purpose to have the windows go down when you open the door? central ohio is not the place for this to happen all the time, due to the ice and I dont what my motor to burn up.

I believe since there isn't a window frame, it lets the glass 'index' to fit into the hard groove in the door frame for a positive seal to prevent wind noise

The window goes up into the window frame, completing the seal. If it didn't do this, we would all have to keep our cars indoors. If the car has no top window frame connected to the door, then this is pretty much necessary. I don't fully understand your gripe... This protects the car; doesn't hurt it in any way. If it had a top window frame that would still get iced over just like it does the way it is. Either way yes ice freezing the windows shut sucks, but it can happen in any car. Gotta take the good with the bad livin in the good ol midwest.

also saves your rubber weather stripping as you can see when you open the door, they wouldnt clear without indexing.
just clean the ice off first....

I used to have a 2007 Subaru STI that didn't have a frame that went around the top. Its windows didn't index when the doors opened, but it still made a good seal and about the same wind noise as the Camaro. So it is possible to make windows like these without requiring them to index.

its more for clearing the weather stripping than it is to seal. the corvette is the same way.

now that you brought that up. i was looking at my window cause i finally have my car to look at, and i noticed the window inside the door with panel off at bottom say's coupe. kind of weird. yea off track i know

but back to it doing that is like another guy said, has to do with no frame and when the door closes the window goes up into its spot as if there were a frame

it also keeps you from the air cushion when 2 doors are closed at same time that 1 wouldnt latch completely like alot of the older cars did.

Besides the window indexing serving a purpose I think it's pretty cool too.
