Guys with HURST SHifters

I like the short throws but it seems quite hard to push the lever into each gear. If you are driving fast and hard its easy to miss a shift.

I am not used to this type of arrangement coming from BMW and Porsche cars which are silky smooth.

Just wondered are there adjustments on the linkage or can it be this way because its so new and needs to wear in?

Has anyone noticed smoother shifting over time and if so how many miles need to be racked on before I notice a change?

If your looking for silky smooth stick to boxers. The Camaro with the Hurst is a MACHINE!! No seriously, you probably won't like the hurst it's very "race". Try the MGW shifter.

Mgw will be a smoother more refined shift...but it will be a longer throw.
The hurst is very "clicky" if you know what I mean by that. Each one has their benefits, and it is totally a personal preference of shift style if you ask me.

I am actually tryign to figure out which one I am going to use, so I know how hard the decision is.

HURST was installed prior to delivery and it was the first one the dealer installed so I had no idea on adjustments or the nature of it.

I got it for the cool factor and I do like it. I am not driving this car like a lunatic anyway so for now its fine. Considering how the car doesnt like my driving downshifts or style I think I need to adapt a new technique all together for now and save the fast spirited driving for my 911 and BMW M5

MGW looks neat but has been out of stock for weeks and I didnt want to wait. The OEM shifter SUCKS and It wasnt even an option for me to wait.


I just feel funny putting so much force in my shifts I hate to break something down there. Im sure over time I will decide if I love it or hate it.

It was posted on another thread but dont know if the shifter is getting smoother or Im getting use to it.
Anyway I think you have 2 options:
Want to have shorter and faster shifts go with hurst

if you want smooth, refined etc keep the stock one (actually its very good)

Would the Hurst or MGW be better? I'm thinking Hurst.

After watching KILLERZ video of going through the gears on his new hurst in his SS, you can hear the click, which I like, but it seems like he puts barely any effort into shifting gears. To me it looks like a flick of the wrist and it changes gears? Do you guys agree?

KILLER74Z28, do you have to put much force into switching gears? From your vid it looks like you could do it with one finger, but seeing is not feeling.

It does not take much force at all. It's a more positive feel than stock but that's a good thing... You really can shift with the flick of your wrist. The shifter really does make it impossible to miss a gear.

I went with the Hurst because it was first to market, 44% shorter, has an awesome “Old School” look, and is a great performance shifter. I also like the fact that I can now tell people Yeah, it’s got a Hurst… I’ve always wanted to be able to say that.

Now, had MGW had their shifter out faster I may have gone that way. From all the Vids George has posted I can really tell that his shifter is top notch. I really like how MGW replaces the stock mounting bracket and their shifter is adjustable to fine tune to your driving habits. I plan on finding a camaro5 member who has the MGW shifter installed and asking them if I can check it out.

I like the Hurst better than the stock shifter for sure. I've had mine for about a month and have 300 miles on it. It feels a little smoother but it could be I'm getting used to it. The only trouble I have is downshifting from 5th to 4th sometimes it wants to go back to 6th instead. The click (or clunk) to me has more to do with the gear box than the shifter imo. I'd like to see a vid of the MGW to compare to Killer's Hurst vid.

I wish MGW had a slightly shorter throw. It seems a little smoother and refined looking in my opinion. I am just hoping they can make me one for my project with a slightly shorter throw.

Guy i have 16,000 mi on my shifter and its not hard to shift it at all, I use the palm of my hand for shifting in to 3 and 5 and the tips of my fingers to go in to 2 and 4 and 6 and yes i still have the click.
