Your right.... my boat is not drawing amps when stored, but, it sits on a dock, out on a lake, in the winter, for 5 months without any charging. Brand new Jetski batteries will go bad in a year if they are not kept charged. I know, I got them too. Cold weather is hell on a uncharged lead acid battery.

As far as cars go..... I have several that sit for long periods of time (2 - 5 months) and they don't go bad either. Usually, my batteries last about as long as advertised 5 yrs. The trick is to not buy the cheap ones.

No tender. Goes for 2 or 3 weeks at a time sometimes without moving. Then drive it to work or around town a bit and it charges right back up. The other cars are on a tender though.

Mine sits for about 2 weeks at a time but I just use my remote start and let it run for the 15 in or so a few times.

I read this thread yesterday and decided to buy a battery tender. Before I installed it, I decided to see if there was any life in the battery - there was - the car started right up. It's been sitting in an unheated garage for exactly two months. Temps have been as low as -25 at nights.

I work out of state and my car sat for 65 days and started with no problem. After reading this post, I will consider a battery tender as I will be leaving in January and not returning until May. Thanks for the info.

I use Battery Tenders on my motorcycle, RV and the Monte Carlo. All start and operate perfectly after long term storage. Long term storage without use and charge will kill and shorten the life of any battery.

The conventional wisdom on late model cars is three weeks.

I just took mine for a spin this afternoon (1st time over 100 mph btw), and, this being December in Massachusetts, it could have been my last ride for the next 3 months.:(

So, the battery tender is now hooked up. Why take a chance?

PS. the Sta-bil is in the tank, which is 7/8 full.

My car was fine for more than 6 weeks last Jan. through Feb. (when it was very cold) and it started just fine. But this summer/fall I went away for 30 days (not all that cold) and it wouldn't start due to low battery power. I had to jump it.

It may be that it's because I locked the car while I was away in the fall and it armed the alarm. Maybe the alarm draws more power than when the car is locked. Or it could be that the battery is a bit older (only like 7 months though). Or it could be that I've had some mods done on the car and they are somehow draining the battery.

I had my shop check to make sure there wasn't something on that shouldn't be on when the car is turned off. They said there was no problem after checking the battery drain. I honestly think it was that the alarm was armed this last time.

I put a Battery Tender on it when I stored it for this winter.

I use battery tenders on everything I own. If it has a battery, and is going to sit for any time at all, it has a tender on it. I have been doing it for years and my batteries tend to last longer than anyone I know, especially on the bikes. It has always seemed like a good idea to monitor the batteries and keep them at peak charge. At around $20 a tender it has always seemed like cheap insurance to make sure my stuff started. With that being said, the battery in the car is sized for the car and the dealer is not going to put a bigger battery in because it ran down. They may warranty the battery with one of the same size.
