LS3 and L99?
So I'm undecied on an auto or manual. Why the difference in hp? Is the LS3 a different motor than the L99? Sorry for the dumb question, just trying to get the facts together.

Yes, the L99 is a different engine than the LS3.
The primary difference you would notice is the L99 with the automatic transmission has AFM - Active Fuel Management. Both perform great and provide a great driving experience. It just depends on your transmisssion choice. Of course there is a strong contingent that would rather have had the LS3 automatic, but that would have put the Camaro in the Gas Guzzler range and added some big bucks in taxes.

I have the L99 (A6) and the TCM & ECM Tunes from Vector Motorsports. EXTREMELY pleased with my decision.

The L99/A6 only needs 2 inexpensive changes to be a GREAT car:
Muffler delete. ECM tune WITH a TCM tune.

Don't let the engines determine your auto or manual. Choose the auto or manual, and enjoy whichever engine you get.

Thanks guys that helps. I tested both and love both. Kinda leaning toward the M6 as I plan to add a blower later and the M6 may hold more horses

The L99 might have 26 less hp, but if you take a look at the 1/4 mile fast list the L99's seems to be just as quick as the LS3 if not even a little better. I went from an LS1 Firebird to an L99 2010 Camaro, and honestly just in normal driving the L99 feels quicker than the LS1.

I have not seen any published 1/4 mi or even 0 to 60 mph times quicker with the L99. This month's Motor Trend showed an LS3 doing 0 to 60 mph in a scant 4.5 seconds. That right there is quicker than any 0 to 60 times I have seen in any magazine for the automatic. Furthermore, there have been no published times of the automatic equaling the 13.0 times of the manual, the automatics usually running about 13.2, which is about 1 to 2 car lengths. 8 out 10 of the quickest 1/4 mi times are LS3's. Read the threads. And as for tuning out your AFM, it's not realistic. Less than 1/10 of 1 percent of Camaro owners will get a tune. So at the end of the day, the L99 is slower 0 to 60 mph as well as the 1/4 mi. GeorgeM |
