Hardest choice ever!
Hello all, im goona be trading in my ss very soon and I am torn between which car to get. I thought I'd get some of your guys' inputs as to which would be better for me. My two choices are a brand new 6th gen 2ss or a 2013-15 zl1. I like the way the zl1 looks more but on the other hand I do care about performance. Which car is going to be faster at the dragstrip? Easier to mod? More powerful? I'm torn between these two cars and need some help fellas.

New SS does get close to the ZL1 in straightline performance, however the ZL1 is still faster. If you want to spend a few grand, you can easily and I mean EASILY make 600 WHP in a ZL1 no problem. Headers, Pulley Swap (Lower and or upper pulley), CAI, and Injectors and you're over 600 WHP depending on pulley setup/tune.
'16SS would have to be supercharged to touch the ZL1. That's going to cost you 6500+ for the blower (Plus labor to install it, and all the necessary parts that go with it) and then much more after that. If you choose to not put a blower on it, heads/cam/exhaust/intake would probably net 500 WHP? Possibly a bit more. '16SS does have a weight advantage, it's lighter than the ZL1. IMO the ZL1 looks better than the kid/hotwheels styling of the '16 SS (However the '17 ZL1 completely changes the look, and is the best looking modern muscle car bar none IMO. But the '16 SS is ugly/wimpy and plain even though it's got aggressive lines.) Both the 5th Gen and 6th Gen ZL1 screams "Tough" and "Fast". Interior I'm sure is improved in the '16 SS, but the 5th Gen ZL1 is far improved from your SS as it is. Take the ZL1 out of the box, put drag radials on it, and it will be plenty fast. Do some simple boltons and it will scream. The LSA is one of the best platforms going. You could make a lot more on the LT1 that's in the '16 SS, but you'd have to spend well over 10 grand to get up to ZL1 bolt on & pulley numbers (600+ WHP) (I'm thinking the LT1 would need headers, supercharger, and maybe a cam. Parts alone that's 8000$, labor to install and all the little gaskets and injectors and things that go along with it, 10,000$+ out the door). If you get the '16 SS, make sure to get the magnetic ride control. For power? 5th Gen ZL1. For being the latest but not greatest? '16 SS. Best of both worlds? '17 ZL1. I've never wanted a ZL1 more than after reading that. You should be a salesman lol

I was in the same boat. 16 2SS or 14 ZL1. Both were priced the same. I chose the ZL1 mainly because of mods available now, and the fact that there are so few around. 6th gens are everywhere. They are still cool, but not ZL1 cool.
Drag radials, headers, and pulley....buh bye 6th gen. never had a chance...lol

This! Exactly this! The biggest problem with the 6th gen stuff RIGHT NOW is that the gen 5 has WAYY more mods and wayy more venders for those mods. The car being as new as it is is naturally going to take longer to get the same aftermarket. Plus the ZL1 is much more rare and badass looking than the 5th gen or 6th gen SS. |

LOL. Really though, I would drive both and see which one tugs at the heart strings more OP. For me it would be Zl1 all day because of a useful backseat. User mileage may vary. |

I ran my buddy last weekend in his 6th gen SS and spanked him twice by 4 car lengths. We are both auto...
AND... I weigh a TON compared to his car! I complain the 5th gen has no room in the back for passengers, but I have put people back there and they said they were surprised at how comfortable it was. The 6th gen has NO ROOM whatsoever... unless you are under 5'5'' and can move your seat all the way up to the steering wheel.

Owning both, I can say without a doubt that I would take the ZL1 over the new SS. They are both great cars but the SS is more cramped and doesn't have that awe factor.

Really? Why? I think it's too Euro looking like the mustang. Each to his own, but to me it's a sports car and no longer a muscle car... Thoughts?...

ZL1. It is a collectors car at this point. Plus 5th gen looks a lot better than the 6th gen, especially the disgusting rear end. You get the gnarly supercharger whine, and an easy 650+ horsepower with little mods. GL both are beautiful cars regardless.

You can get a used ZL1 for the same price (maybe cheaper) than a new 6th Gen. Dealers around here have 2016 2SS hard-tops going for ~$47k and 2SS convertibles for ~$53k. These are the prices on the STICKER FROM GM! They are NOT marked up. Aside from the ridiculous pricing, the soft styling also sways me towards the ZL1. These two factors alone are why most dealers still have dozens of 2016's sitting on their lots.
