USB Indexing Problem

Well I had my freaking iPhone 3Gs updated to IOS 4.. Now I have no portable Indexed Audio Device....

But hey,, So I figured.. I got this Brand New 4 Gbyte Cruzer sitting un-used..

Loaded it up with 15 Folders in the Root
Each album besides one has only up to 15 songs in it..
the big one has 34 songs in one album(folder) A mix of Rock stuff...

Plugging it in time..:
It goes and starts playing the First song in the Alphabetically first album(folder) it finds.. Very choppy for the first few seconds.. Then sits and Indexes.. Indexes.. After 1 Min 45-50 seconds, display says "Done" and previous source starts playing.. FM for example..

Give it 2 minutes it hops back to USB.. By itself..Starts playing the first song over again.. Again a bit choppy..
Give it about 1:45 to 1:50, and once again it gives up.. and this will continue for as long as I have the Cruzer plugged in..

So I figured, hey I have this other 4 Gbyte memorystick from MicroCenter..
Fromatted it.. Loaded up only 10 Albums in the root.. Made sure every folder only has .mp3 format files in them.. and that no folder has more than 24 songs(files) in them...

Guess what.. same symptoms..

Anyone Else Experince this,, solution?
Mycar was manufactured in April 2010, and already had the lates SW / Firmware in it..

New one to me. What bit rate are your songs? I wouldn't go higher than 192kb (higher may work but the higher you go the harder it is for the PDIM). Are they from clean sources or from random places on the internet? Sounds like it's puking on some of your music.

I've got a 3Gs with the new os and it still plays, sometimes. I keep getting the message saying that the jack is out. Is that the same message you're getting?

I'm using a 2gb Lexar JD360 with no issues. All my songs are mp3 at 128 bit rate. There are a little over 300 songs on it. I went through and edited all of the tags so it only shows artist and title. When it indexes, it displays by song name but I can go into settings and choose by artist, album, etc.

Have you thought about getting your PDIM tested? I took mine in last week because it would only work (wasn't even recognized) after disconnecting the battery and worked until the car was shut off. Dealer said the module had a short and ordered a new one. Funny thing is, I took it in on Friday and was scheduled for service on Monday. PDIM worked fine in the meantime after they diagnosed it but before they replaced it...

Replaced on Monday and no complaints...

Also, what format are you using (NTSF, FAT32, etc)? That might make a difference too. I can't remember what I am currently using by I think it is NTSF. You may need to reformat.

Thanks for the advice .. I'll check em out..
I know I am using FAT32, also don't think it will read NTFS
(Since it's a Microsoft Proprietary File System)

I'll try a re-format.. As all it has is the file system format that was on it when I bought it..
I'll check/edit the tags and see if it helps..

Although I have 2 memory sticks.. It read neither one .. Same symptom on both.. So I am beginning to think the common culprit mght be the PDIM box ..

No-one else had this exakt ting happen?
It just sits there and indexes.. then it Switches to the previous source, as if I would of unplugged the USB Stick.. And a few seconds laer it connects again.. and the audio is a bit choppy on and off as it is indexing..

The issues with iPhones and the USB stick are not related. The iPhone is like an iPod - its indexed by the device not by the Camaro. For the problem not indexing/detecting the USB - it may be related to your folder structure. I have messed with the USB a lot and have a lot of experience (frustration) with it. For one thing, you do not want every CD in a different folder - it will take forever to index. Also, you do not want all files in the root of the drive - that causes problems too if you have >1000 files. Then I saw the symptoms you're describing - >2 min to index than it acts like the USB stick is not there. If you wait another 10-15 min it will eventually "show up" ... sometimes. What you want to do is to organize your songs into a few large folders. What I do is sort by the artist and put the popular artists (>100 songs) in their own folder. For everything else I made a "Misc" folder and put them there. So I have about 1500 songs organized into about 10-12 folders and that seems to index quickly (about 1 min or so) and it seems to act reliably.

Excellent.. I'll try the different folder structure..
And yes I know the issues iPhone/USB aren't related.. just wanted to rant a bit.. Since I have not used USB until the iPhone crapped out.. And only now did I noticed the USB issue..
Working a a system and databse specialist.. I tried to think how PDIM would be designed to attempt to read the data.. If I would of programmed it..
Me thinking many folders with lesser files and subfolders would of been the way .. haha..

Allright..Thanks all you guys..

I have the exact same problem with a 16gb Duracell & an 8gb Cruzer. I've tried putting all the songs in one folder & splitting them up into artist folders, but still no luck.
