l99 to ls3 conversion

What benefits do you get converting from a l99 to a ls3?

Get rid of the AFM and VVT components. Ability to use a more aggressive cam with a higher lift. The L99 technically is an LS3 with AFM and VVT.

First, you will get rid of bad AFM lifters that will always fail after some time.

second, you will run on V8 all the time, and That the way the Camaro should be running.

Third, through a cam in the mix and gain some decent power.

I have my afm tuned out so i am on all 8. The conversion alone gives no real gain. Is that correct?

Not correct.

You still have the inferior AFM lifters.

Also, the higher-lift cam in the LS3 is what generates the extra 26 hp.

That said, VVT is actually good technology. It's what enables the L99 to generate more torque with less hp. There are performance shops out there (Texas Speed is one) that make a more aggressive VVT cam for you're L99, and I personally believe that the higher-lift VVT cam is a better upgrade than the LS3 conversion.

The AFM lifters still need to go, though.

With that said. You can do a AFM delete, but keep your VVT, but as everyone is suggesting, you would change the lifters to a complete (All 16) LS7 Set and dump the 8 AFM lifters.

The thing is that if you are going to change the cam, you might as well put something more aggressive in it. There are far to many other variables, like changing the torque converter, rear gears (to compensate for loss of bottom end torque), etc that turns this project into a endless rabbit hole

A lot since the top of the engine comes apart. With parts and labor good shops get anywhere from $4k on up to do it. Parts and labor.

$1200? Make sure they are reputable. That sounds way cheap. I was at or around $4k to do the delete both DOD/AFM and cam, including torque converter, but once I added the GM performance heads it went up another $1200. Anyway, $1200 sounds impossible, but get it in writing.

It is in writing and they came highly reccomended by several people I work with who have taken there cars and trucks to him.

700.00- DOD Delete, HD IWIS Timing Chain, New Gaskets(MLS for the heads), ARP Bolts, Melling High Pressure Oil Pump, Stock LS3 cam, Fluids.
275.00- Patriot Extrme Valve Spring Kit
112.00- Heavy Duty Pushrods

Also getting the heads done for another 525.00.

With all the extra I added its gonna be $5700 out the door. But were looking to get around 500 rwhp.

Good luck with your conversion rickv16
