I have KOOKS LT headers with KOOKS high flow CATS and the Magna-flow #16483 3" CAT Back. You will have drone at 1800 RPM in 6th gear. Anybody who tells you that you won't is just trying to sell you something.

I'm not trying to sell anything but I will admit I don't drive on the highway very much.

I'll try to make a mental note to specifically listen at that RPM in 6th gear next time.

I have driven it on the highway a handfull of times and never remember hearing any drone. I'm still going to keep my stance that I have yet to hear any drone with this setup.

Maybe I read it wrong but I dont think that has anything at all to do with what the OP asked
I have found that most of the people looking for 3" exhausts are doing so because someone told them it made more power, sounded better, or whatever. I was making the point that this is not true, and deciding you only wants a 3" exhausts limits your choices and almost always means you will pay more than a comparable 2.5" exhaust.

I've got the same setup as SSooch, and it does drone at 1800 rpm in 6th, but it depends on the engine load. If you've got a tail wind, or are going slightly downhill the drone is not as bad--it increases with load. I'd say the drone is slightly louder with the Kooks and Magnaflow 3" than the GMPP 2/5" axle-back I had before I added the headers and 3" cat-back. Nothing either J-pipes or a 500W subwoofer wouldn't fix.

OP ALREADY HAS 3" Magnaflow, so the merits of 3 vs 2.5 is a moot point. He's question was concerning sound after adding headers not which system cost less or makes more HP.

I have the exact Magnaflow and headers he is refering too, and my advice is that it is not bad. However that is based simply on my opinion and experience with other cars..exhaust and drone, I'm sure others will disagree. The only time I notice it is in 6th gear on the interstate and compared to my previous cars the drone is very very minor, I love the Kooks/Magnaflow combination.

Again opinions will vary as everyone will have different thoughs as to what sounds good or what is acceptable.

Hope this helps you OP.

The exhaust gas not being pressurized creates more resonance. I am making 650 rwhp and still have room to grow through 1 3/4" stepped to 1 7/8" Kooks, and a 2.5" Borla Stinger.

So you still get drone even after a tune? I had my AFM turned off because this is what I thought caused the drone?

In that case, I dont understand why people buy a cat back at all.... Stock system has been proven to make the same power as any of the cat backs out there up to 600+ rwhp...

That being said, I bought the 3" Magnaflow purely for sound. I had the Dynatech headers, cats, and a Corsa catback. Quiet on the highway? yup.. Sound like crap any other time? absolutely!!! I listened to countless sound clips of every header/catback combo and ended up with the 3" Magnaflow... Perfect around town.. Yes a little resonance on the highway at 1800 rpm in 6th... Fixed that by putting the car in 5th gear...

I have the Magnaflow 16483 along with the KOOKS 1-7/8" LTs w/cats on my Camaro and it is a great combination. I've heard a ton of combinations and drone is very subjective. The 16483 along with LT's in my opinion is a good compromise between great WOT sound and cabin noise. You can hear a little resonance around 1800 RPM when you're lugging it but you can still have a conversation and it doesn't rattle your brain. Although the 3" tubing doesn't help with performance below 600 RWHP I still like the deep sound at idle, it is all subjective.

Please feel free to call, email or PM me anytime with questions! Good luck and have a great weekend!

Kind regards,

Magnaflow 2.5" comp cat-back and Stainless Works 1 7/8 no cats... horrendous drone from about 74mph-82mph with the top up. None down.

I can imagine! That is a combination I guarantee to have serious drone! You can add some Magnaflow mufflers or get the Street Series axle-back to basically create a 16579 (Street Series).

I hate to say it now, because you already have the 3' system, but the Magnaflow Street Catback would have been a better choice for you.

The Magnaflow Street Catback keeps the drone and noise levels in check with long tube headers.

Long Tube headers make all catbacks (even the stock catback) significantly louder.
