News Article Link for the Up-coming Z28 From Durham Region (Oshawa, ON)

Justing looking through the local paper online here in Regional Municipality of Durham (where the GM Oshawa plant is located and where the current Camaro is manufactured) and found an article on the up-coming Z28

GM could resurrect iconic Camaro Z28 at Oshawa flex plant

High-end sports car to be produced in Oshawa by 2012, industry sources say

Dec 09, 2010 - 04:30 AM

Tony Van Alphen

OSHAWA -- The iconic Chevrolet Camaro Z28 muscle sports car will make a comeback in Oshawa.

General Motors Co., which is recovering from a brush with bankruptcy, will resurrect the most powerful model in the Camaro family at its Oshawa assembly complex late next year or early in 2012, industry sources said Friday.

Company officials would not confirm the return of the high-performance niche sports car, which GM had stopped producing along with other Camaro models in Ste. Therese, Que., where it closed a sputtering assembly plant in 2002.

But insiders familiar with GM's product plans here said the automaker will add the Z28 to its lineup and the only logical place to build the model is Oshawa.

That's where GM began assembling the Camaro coupe again on its new flexible manufacturing line in March 2009. The plant is the only source for the car in the world and it will add a convertible version next year.

The Detroit Free Press also reported earlier in the day that GM will revive the Z28 as a 2012 model with a supercharged version of the current Camaro SS V8 engine that cranks out between 500 and 600 horsepower.

One Oshawa plant source said there have been few rumblings about a Z28 comeback, but noted the operation would be the only place for GM to build it profitably.

"I haven't personally heard of the Z28 making a comeback, but it wouldn't surprise me," said the source. "If that happens, Oshawa is really the only place that would make any sense simply because there are so many common parts from the other Camaros."

Tony LaRocca, GM's director of communications, would not comment on a third Camaro coming to Oshawa.

"GM has not confirmed any product plans beyond the soon-to-be-launched Camaro convertible from the Oshawa flex plant," he said.

The addition of the Z28 would probably mean only incremental, if any, job increases at the Oshawa complex because production would not generate huge volumes.

The plant, which employs about 4,000 full-time workers, is currently preparing to build the Camaro convertible and the Buick Regal with the addition of a second shift. It also builds the Chevrolet Impala mid-size car and the Equinox crossover vehicle on a second line, but has the capacity to build more models.

The Camaro has sped past the Ford Mustang, its main muscle car competitor, in North American sales this year. The convertible and a Z28 model would help efforts to maintain current momentum in the market.

Auto watchers say the Camaro's distinct styling cues, with some recognition of past versions plus much better fuel economy than its predecessors, have boosted sales. In Canada, Camaro volumes have jumped to almost 4,000 from about 2,400 in the same 2009 period.

Camaro output in Oshawa for world markets has climbed to 87,358 so far this year from 73,820 at the same date in 2009.

While GM plans another model, Honda announced Friday it would stop production next year of the Element, a boxy crossover vehicle introduced in 2002, because of falling sales.

But the article clearly states:

Company officials would not confirm the return of the high-performance niche sports car,

That article was a little all over the place!

Cool nonetheless, even if Number 3 did have to spill his buzzkill all over it.....
