This. I don't know why people can't grasp that concept. I have all but written off spending $50k on a new car that has so many people flustered with the imperfections and issues and now a recall and low sales. I have pretty much decided to wait it out and see what happens in 2017-2018. However, that doesn't mean I don't want a new car.

The reality is that will probably be my "new" car...new to me at least. I'm probably going to bite the bullet on a used 2012-2013 Corvette Grand Sport. You can find them for around $36k with under 30k miles if you look hard enough. That's literally $35k depreciation over 3 years that some other poor soul ate on my behalf. That's called smart shopping. Look at the trend over the past 5 years...these Corvettes drop off drastically, and then even out for years. But people allow their emotions to get in the way and they say NO, you MUST buy a new Camaro as soon as it's released instead of a used this or that...or else you're not a real bowtie loyalist!!!! I'll look at the 6th Gen Camaro again when it's had time to prove its overall reliability and expose its quirks.

Wouldn't it be wiser to lease for two years than buy anything? Not knowing the miles on the M3, there's a good chance it's up for a $3-5k service with it's age (and probably why someone got rid of it). So I'm not seeing a smart financial decision period with this guy. Sure the M3 will retain it's value more so at this point, but what about all the "other" expenses?

Leasing has limitations that come with it, and a lot of people dislike the idea that you don't really "own" the car.

Buying a V8 anything, be it a Mustang, Camaro, BMW, Challenger...isn't what one would call a wise financial investment.

I'd be curious to know his thoughts on the recent M4 vs SS Head to Head and if he regrets not waiting for a 1LE.

Probably not because of his reasoning was skipping the depreciation hit of a brand new car because he will only have it for a couple years.

Or it could be he just wanted to drive a different car than a Camaro

People are allowed to like and own cars other than a 6th Gen Camaro.

I had many BMW in my day 2000 CS, 2800 CS, 2002 Tii. My GFs were in general BMW owners and I worked on them quite a bit all the way to the first M3, which I loved but went out and got two GLH-S from Caroll and his hot daughter forgot her name. Anyway there was a saying around the BMW crowd, if you can't afford a new one you certainty can't afford an old one. I was looking at 600 for each porcelain rondal on my Coupe. There are 4 I think.

So yeh I can afford a Mx whatever, wait for the cost of the parts its not like NAPA has them...

Love the car, love the look, but I can get a 1ss, a supercharger, a killer set of rims, keep my Type R, and pay for 2 of the 3 kids college on a year on year basis.

I understand why he wanted to get a used car, but personally I don't see why people like those cars without much torque. He could have bought a used 5.8L GT500, CTS V, C6Z06, Zl1, etc. for probably about the same price he paid for his M3. To each his own I guess.

When you do buy that vette ...make sure it has had the heads/valves re-worked. Mechanic i know who owns a 2012 vette told me that the valves are sodium filled or something and they are kinda delicate so they need to be revamped before the 35k mile mark or you start to run increasingly bigger risk of dropping a valve...which will inevitably happen, runs about $3k
