Max allowed highway speed limit by State:

It would be nice to know the maximun miles per hour tolerated above your highway speed limit in each state before the police ticket you.?

So to make it a quick reference write it:

State / Hwy mph limit / tolerared max speed
PA/65/70
QC/60/74

That's not set in stone. It's really up to what the officer decides to do. In Pa on the highways that are 65MPH most won't ticket you until you're over 70.

isnt a speed limit a limit? So technically anything over the limit they can ticket you. Pretty cut and dry.

No. Actually you need to be above 5mph the speed limit to ticket you.
The question is how much mph higher then the limit have you past the police without getting a ticket on a daily basis.

Technically yes. That's why I said it's really up to the officer. Most won't for 1 or 2 over though because it's pretty easy to fight that ticket.

Actually no. Anything above the limit and they can ticket you. Most officers just choose not to.

What laws are you reading? Most states across the country state the limit that is posted/dictated or what is reasonable and prudent. Therefore, if the limit is 65mph, technically speaking, 66mph is against the law and the officer has every right to cite you for that. Now, morally, most officers have their own personal logic about when a citation is warranted. I see it mostly around 7mph+.

Side note, you can get cited for driving 60mph in a 65mph zone. That is where the law allows officers to determine what is reasonable and prudent. IE: Is it raining heavily with low visibility therefore a speed of 40mph would be more prudent to the conditions.

Sorry they can give you a ticket for going 1 mile over. The 5 miles over came to play when they was mechanical speedometers. With the mechanical ones they could off by has much as 5 miles so they ave you the miles. Now with the electronic speedometers they are more accurate.

That only applies if you are on multi lanes freeways. Here the laws reads the speed or lower then the speed limit.

Because speedometers aren't all exactly the same it is VERY hard to be convicted on anything 5mph and less above the limit. Therefore, LEO's will rarely waste they're time and yours writing them. About the only time you'll get one for 5mph over is if your actually going 10-15 over and the LEO reduces it on the ticket to cut you a break on points and fines. Which is becoming rare these days due to financial issues most states have. 80% of tickets being written are for the $ rather than public safety. If the law really wanted everyone to slow down they could just post an officer (or empty police car) on the shoulder every 2 miles. But, they won't make much $ if everyone's doing the limit now will they.

Thats is why I asked for each state since the laws are different. Here in the province of Quebec, you need to go over the speed limit by 7mph to be eligible for an infraction ticket.

Not in Texas, we call them speed suggestions. The standardized speed limit known to all of Texans in small to mid sized city is 40 MPH, and then if you live in a metropolitan area like Dallas or Austin and so on it's an understood 50-60 and if the lights turn yellow you punch it before it does turn red.

However, I have come across some troopers that say they'll even let 10 mph pass on a highway just because our roads are long, straight and boring. I've also come across troopers that say they'll only allow 5 mph, so it's really just a matter of who you end up with.

So in our 85 MPH highways we can go up to 90 maybe even 95?
